Finally made the decision to switch back to a 2-stroke yama. I definitely want a motor that is proven. My boat is a 2072 war eagle designed for catfishing. Its plate states up to a 150 hp. Any ideas on a good choice in the YAMA line? ALSO, I might consider switching to another line.
For those that are interested about the 4-stroke headeaches, please refer to the threads per LOYD on 4-strokes 115 yamas.

I looked back and your original posts are empty. I'm afraid you're going to have to fill in the gaps. From what little I can see, your trepidations are self-inflicted. Give the motor a chance and read your owner's manual. 4-strokes have different idiosyncracies than 2-strokes, and outboard 4-strokes have different idiosyncracies than your car's motor. It's just a matter of getting accustomed to something new. :)

If you need to be concerned about emissions, then the Yamaha HPDI is a nice motor from what I hear. The Yamaha 150 OX66 is also a very nice motor. You might consider a 150 4-stroke, but it sounds like nothing said will change your sour taste. If you change brands, you might have gauges that are incompatible let alone the wiring harness. Throttle/shift is usually adaptable to most anything these days. Changing brands tends to lead to scarring ... different things fitting differently and leaving obvious signs. :(

Re: HAD IT WITH THE 2005 FS115 YAMAHA

The engine, with only 5 hours break-in time, has on 2 different occasions made alot of oil. I've followed break-in protocol per text. I've been running in the upper rpm range and still getting gas in oil. Oil appears black. I do know that the viscosity has been diluted{not a good thing}. Engine started missing after a long run{1 1/2 hours 4500+ rpms} and barely made it back to landing. Its in the shop for eval.

Let them look it over and see what's up. It's not unusual for things to need attention during the first hours. Actually it's to be expected. Hopefully it's something minor.

They did call and said they were going to replace the thermostat. The marine tech told me that this should take care of the engine problems{missing and making oil}. Also, told me to run it for several hours between 4500-5500 rpms to set the rings.

Do what the wrench said, LOYD.

The problems you have had are not uncommon and the fix he recommends really works. That is a fine engine.

Meanwhile, relax and take your finger off the trigger. You have gone off on Yamaha and that engine far too quickly and far too harshly.

If all else fails, just send the engine to me and I will dispose of it for you. :D

Hi,
Personally I would not give up on that F115 yet. Proper break in is important on any outboard. And read some of Rodbolts comments about Yamaha F115 gas in oil and You will get some good advice to follow.
It might be that You got a "lemon" but the risk is very low. The F115 is one of the most proven 115 hp 4-strokes since it has been on the market since 1999. To the best of my knowledge only Honda have a 115 hp 4-stroke that has been on the market longer (I belive the Honda BF115 came in 1998 on the market, it has carburators).

So in comparison with Mercury 115 EFI, Suzuki DF115/Johnson 115 4-stroke the Yamaha F115 is actuallt proven and has been longest on the market except for Honda BF115.

So just relax a little and make the break in of Your F115 properly acoording to the F115 manual. After the 10 hour break in period is ended try some higher RPM trips and also with full RPM.

If You after this still have problem You maybe have a "lemon" or similar.
If You then want to get a 2-stroke and 115 hp I would probably switch over to Mercury Optimax 115 (it is only 3 cyl but test has shown it to be as good as their 4-stroke 115 EFI). That way You will get Direct Fuel Injection, 3-star rated etc.
If You want to try another 4-stroke 115 hp the Suzuki DF115, Johnson 115 4-stroke and Mercury 115 EFI will be very good outboards also.

Good luck and do not give up yet on your F115.
(I have a F115 myself and I'm very satisfied with my outboard, have used it two seasons so far.)

Bo,

Again thanks alot for the encouragement. I'm going to give it a little longer. I did talk to yamaha corp this AM and they seem to be concerned with my situation. They do have everything documented from the dealership.

loyd gaines neal

Re: HAD IT WITH THE 2005 FS115 YAMAHA

Loyd,
F.W.I.W. I have a 115 FS Yamaha and although I have been harboring some fears based on a lot of negative comments I have had no trouble with it at all in the "making oil" issue. I ran it in by the book and then switched to Mobil 1 and the oil is clean and undiluted at change time. I got it in Oct. 2003 and it has got lots of hours on it, both in hot weather and in winter. I do quite a bit of slow running looking for structure on the Ohio river but I always run it hard between holes and especially back to the ramp but never hard cold. If you are only 5 hours into it at least finish the break-in and see where you end up. I really like mine, it's quiet economical and so far has been a pleasure to run except for a mysterious quirk where the trim motor will start lifting the motor when I am anchored down. No one (around here) can find an answer to that one!! ...W

Arcwinston I don't want to hijack Loyds post because I don't have any to help him but I just fixed a similar ghost tilt activation in my Evinrude. It was a stray strand of wire at the solder terminal on the tilt switch crossing over to the power wire at odd times. I needed a magnifying glass just to see it. I was just standing around and the motor just went up. Could be dangerous if you're fiddling with the engine

Sounds like bad fuel to me. Checked your tank?

I'm curious about the ring setting, everything I've been told about break-in says it's thermal cycles (start-run-cool down) that you want running at varying speeds.

Biederboat

Biederboat,
What you say is correct, it is just alot of people don't run the engine long enough to get it good and warm.
