i have a 14ft starcraft v-hull aluminum boat would it be safe to put a 20 hp mercury on it beacuse the rating plate is faded out the boat is a 1965

I sure wouldn't put anything bigger on that boat. Many of the 14' tinnys of that period were rated for 14hp.

take a little rubbing alcohol to the plate and rub some on with a cloth. Usually it will allow to to see the information on slightly (enought to make out the HP rating anyhow). Local dealer told me this tip when I couldn't read the one on my Lund as it was sun faded.

I have a 14' Starcraft (1963) and mine is rated for 20 HP on the data plate. I have an 18 evinrude (1967) on mine.

I'm betting your boat looks more like the pic above, but if it looks like our '67 14' starcraft, it will take up to a 40hp.
