Hello Guys!
Need your help regarding an Evinrude Outboard with the following info:
Ficht Ram 150 year 2000
S/N E150FCXSSM
GO4863985

This engine dont want to start, the flywheel just go 1 turn when we trigger the ignition, thats it, just one turn, The starter sounds fine. We already try all the troubleshooting from the service manual "Evinrude Johnson 90-115-150-175. This engine only have 70 hours of use. As a clue this problem start since the boat was sittinig for over a year. The cables looks fine, already changed any fuse around. This engine in an Outboard.

Any ideas????

Thanks

Does the starter drop back down as if it lost power or is it still popped up like it's trying to start the engine? If it's down, and there is no power, perhaps check the battery and make sure it has enough juice to start it. If for some reason the starter isn't getting any power then you need to figure out why not.

The battery has plenty of power, since the starter hit the flywheel with power, also other batteries has been tested too.

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

sounds like a starter problem.
when the fly wheel stops, is it sudden, does it grind to a halt?
try oiling the starter.
and check that there is no electrical shorts

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

I agree with bowman, if it's barely trying to start, check the starter itself, or possible the starter solenoid if it has one. I had an old '78 35hp Johnson with a bad solenoid and it would pop the starter up once in a while, then drop it. Replaced it and problem went away for good.
If you want to just get it running to make sure it runs ok, you could try wrapping a rope around the top of the flywheel and pulling it, but you will have to have your ignition switch in the on position, and I can't imagine how hard it's going to be to turn a 150 by pull rope. I am pretty sure there is a way to jump the starter also, but don't know how to do it off hand.

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

Actually this is my neighboor boat, this boat has been taken to a few "mechanics" and no one find the trouble here, also the computer has been changed and the engine still with the trouble. There is a main fuse thats we go override it, i mean connect the cables togheter directly and the starter doesnt work. I will contact my neighboor for more details.

Might be stupid mechanics, wouldn't be the first time..... I know I've encountered a few of them.

try hitting the side of the starter with a hammer, while someone else tries to start it.
it this starts it, that means you need a new starter.

The starter hit the flywheel with power, the flywheel just go around one turn and stop. Im think that the starter is doing his job. What about the stator?

Or if it has a starter solenoid, hit that too if hitting the starter doesn't work. As I said earlier, I had a 35hp with a bad solenoid, had to tap it with pliers to get it to go. It finally got too worn out I guess, or too much tapping.
Let us know what happens.

does the flywheel act like it doesn't wana turn, even if you turned it by hand.
try pull starting it, and seeing if you can pull it more than one revolution.
maybe the flywheel is hitting a block somewhere down in the engine block.

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

Please dont hit the starter with a hammer as it will crack and bust magnets internally which will mean a new starter later. Take a 12 volt test light and check that it lights at solenoid battery side, hold key to start does other side of solenid light? If so check connections to starter or starter itself. If it lights and stops check small terminal on soleniod for voltage when key is turned. If no or dropped voltage the keyswitch or neutral safty in control box bad. If ok replace solenoid

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

Have you tried taking the spark plugs out so there's no compression and seeing how the starter works then? Also, have you tried taking the plugs out and trying to turn the flywheel by hand to see if anything is binding in the engine?
Just some ideas to try,

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

Just curious. I was looking at a nice 35hp evinrude when shopping motors, when we pulled it out the tank and layed it horizontal. We noticed oil coming out a weep hole in the lower unit. Neither the seller or myself knew what it was. Can I assume it was gear oil leaking out? Btw, I didn't buy the motor, and actually the seller refused to sell it.

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

could it have been leaking down from the powerhead?
if so, it is a busted head gasket.
of a busted lower unit seal.

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

You may want to start your own thread about that, because no one is going to look in here for that question. (I got told the same thing when I sort of hijacked someone's thread, so don't feel bad and no offense).

Re: Guys Need your HELP! Evinrude

Thank You

Now back to the Evinrude 150, already talk to my friend and they did all the wiring, the power pack has been changed and as fact this outboard is an EFI. I let him know to check the solenoid, If there is one, not sure abouth this outboard but mine has two. Will keep up to date guys.
