guides not wide enough

I took some trailer guides off one trailer and want to put them on my current one. Probelm is this boat is wider than the other one and the guides don't mount cleanly to the trailer.
I thought about using a section of 2x4 clamped on my u-bolts to the frame of the trailer, and then mounting the guides using longer bolts.
Anyone see a problem with this idea?

Re: guides not wide enough

How heavy is the boat? Heavy enough to snap a 2X4 when it hits the guide? You never know when a wind gust or a wave or current will play havoc while trying to retrieve. (don't ask how I know ;) ) How bout using a piece of galvanized square tubing? Maybe even and old piece of galvanized chain link fence post.

I think the boat weighs around 2500lbs? 16 foot Rinker bowrider I/O.
I thought of using metal instead of 2x4, will need to see what feels more secure.
The ramp I will be using 90% of the time is pretty well shielded from wind gusts and waves.

2500, go with metal, i have a friend w/ a welder a home, we just ran a 1" square tube across my trailer and welded the guides to it. i thought it was a little boat.
