Anyone else remember a turning point in your life when you realize that you are getting older?

I reached another one this morning. Left the house with my 12 year old grand daughter and headed up the mountain to reach our tree stand. For the first time I had to tell her to wait up as I was falling behind. I have this Peter Pan complex and I have always thought that I would never grow up but it struck me that at 77 I ain?t the person I used to be.

The last time was twenty years ago when I was playing in an adult hockey league where the average age was about 25. I had played defense all my life up to then but a twenty year old broke out with the puck and headed down my lane. I gave it everything I had but by the time he was at the crease he was so far ahead I couldn?t even reach out my stick far enough to hook his. My wife claims I sulked around for a week after that. I probably did because it hit me that I was getting older.

Growing old sucks but as they say it beats the other alternative.

first realization that age would catch me, was when my son was 18. he started riding dirt with me when he was 4 on his own bikes, started racing at 5. at 12 we switched to 4 wheelers, man it was fun we could ride all day. it was fun to watch him try to catch the old man.
than one day we went into a turn, he t-boned me pretty good. when the dust settled he was like WTH? why did you slow down for that turn?
I crashed three times that day basically trying to still be able to beat him. finally he recommended we go back to the camper as my game seemed a little "off".
that was the day I realized he could beat me whenever he wanted from now on.

I still ride like a kid now and than, compared to folks my age with normal intelligence LOL but yeah the days of showing up the young guns are gone.

although.........I do have a 5 year old grandson who still thinks I'm fast............maybe I can beat him for the next few years LOL

They say you are only as old as you think you are. And that works great while sitting down thinking you can do most anything yet. BUT, then you get up, slowly sometimes, and start to do things your brain said you can, and realize your brain doesn't listen to your body...at all! Mental wise, I feel pretty darn good yet. But my body has its own story. And what I think is funny is watching my adult sons getting older and feeling the typical body aches and pains that comes with age and a body wearing out. And then I tell them, nobody says that when I get older I will have this aliment or that aliment. It just happens.

Just keep plugging along until you can;t anymore. What else can you do? :noidea:

First time one of the "kids" in the office didn't know (while looking at it) what a 35mm slide was. My whole childhood is recorded on those things ...

... dang it. Start looking for grey hair. :faint2:

There's a whole list of things I grew up with that today's "adults" have no idea what they are.
A young lady here at work collects antiques and was thrilled when I gave her an extra rotary desk phone I had.

First clue for me was no request for ID on a beer purchase. The worst one is younger girls holding the door open for me.

If I were to pluck out my gray hair, I would be bald.

When my doctor looks like a young Doogie Houser. Wondering just how long that lifetime warranty for purchases really is? Trying to make heads or tails out of Medicare options.

I can't even say showing ID for beer is an ego boost - I live in a 100% ID for alcohol county, so everyone has to show.

When my son had to wait for me to catch up (instead of the other way around) - on a hiking trail, on a snowmobile trail, on a ski trail...

Then, last night at pickup hockey, one of the "kids" that used to play with my son said "man I'm losing a step, I feel old - like I'm 40" Doh!

I'm glad at my age I still "have" it. I just wish my wife would let me use it.

My father told me he never felt old until I turned 50.

My eldest daughter just turned 40. I'm beginning to understand...lol

You beat me to saying almost the same message, almost word for word. When my Grandsons tease me about not keeping up with them I tell them "I may be slow, but I go far"
