We use a lot of garlic and onions. Store bought.
For no reason 4 of the cloves of garlic sprouted two inch green stems. Sitting on the counter and not in direct sunlight I never had this happen before.

Can I put them in some potting soil and grow them??
Has anyone else done this?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Link

Re: Growing Garlic

Sure you can, plant em' just like tulips. In fact plant all the cloves individually, even if they haven't sprouted. The garlic we grow here we plant in the fall time, and it gets an early start as soon as the soil warms up outside.

Re: Growing Garlic

The store bought garlic is mostly soft garlic. It will grow just fine but if you want to grow enough to keep for a long time then plant a hard neck varity. At least in the colder climates anyway.

Re: Growing Garlic

Yes just put them in the ground and add some fertilizer they will grow just fine.

When the top starts developing the flower bud snip it off - you do not want the plant to flower -

Then when the green portion dies down is time to dig them up.

When the green top dies off the bulb is formed, if you dig them up prior to that their will be no bulb.

Tomatolord

I grow it every year just as described above. Easy easy crop, great eating :)

If you build it, they will come. If you plant it, it will grow.

Re: Growing Garlic

Hey thanks people for the input.
A google search on hard garlic as OMC mentioned, made for some good reading.
I tried 'elephant garlic' a few months ago because it was neat to look at but really had no flavor.
So its into the pots and we will see what happens.
Thanks
