Following a previous thread, Stan_Deezy expressed an interest in learning how to grow plants you can eat (herbs/veg etc).
I am a Nurseryman, and don't mind showing what and how I do things, along with photos etc, and relating it to the home gardener.
I don't wish to take up a lot of space and bore people, (plus waste my time), so is anybody else interested in this topic, before I go ahead?
Cheers
Phillip

Knock your self out Phil. I'd be interested in how you guya down yonder do things. I've always grown a vegetable garden. Best move I ever made was taking soil samples and sending them in to be tested to see what it needed. Came back telling me to add lime. I did that last winter so I should really see some benefit this growning season.

Re: Growing food

I have a bunch of pet coffins (stone boxes) that I was going to use to grow herbs, but then I learned herbs aren’t necessary small plants, regardless if they come in small pkgs at the grocery store. Yeah, I want a herb garden. And a fig tree, but there are too many types of figs!!! I want the biggest, messiest fig tree to plant right next to the property line so it hangs over the neighbor’s house and drops fruit into his gutters. What variety makes a good assault fig?!?

Re: Growing food

I'll be starting my tomatoes (and maybe some peppers) this week, grown from the seed saved each year! I have been doing this for 4 years know, best tomatoes I have found! I like to use all organic stuff (BS)(well when I can get it) and no bug sprays or other chemicals!

Re: Growing food

If you are up for it, you might want to buy one of those ugly tomatoes from your local farmer’s market or organic market. I think they are called heirloom tomatoes, they are ug-ly! Ugly irregular shape, usually large, orange/yellow/green, never red. But the flavor is supposed to be unsurpassed. They were deemed too ugly for display in markets, not a red globe, so we don’t see them. In the last few years they have been making a minor return in smaller, specialized grocery stores. Buy one, use the seeds.

There is a nursery in northern Calif that has been going around the country for years collecting cuttings from really old apple trees, trying to save the apple as it was originally. From what I read, apples were also a really ugly fruit with a phenomenal taste, something most of us today never experienced.

Re: Growing food

the tomatoes I grow are heirloom as well, not the ugly ones they are dark blood red very meaty and large. One slice covers a sandwich! they remind me of the ones I grew when I was a kid,,,,,
The peppers I plant are heirloom as well, I dislike the genetic BS that's being done to our food today, stuff like crossing a fish with a tomato, just aint right!

Re: Growing food

It's the tomatos that look like tomatos but feel like baseballs that I dislike.

Planted an herb garden two years ago...very small, maybe 5 ft by 3 ft, beside the driveway, in a spot that doesn't get watered. Rosemary, thyme, sage, a couple parsleys, basil, bronze fennel - which is a beautiful plant, by the way. The first summer, I watered it a couple times, everything survived. Now the rosemary completely fills the spot. Okay with me, I like the way it looks. Haven't fed or watered it in 2 years - very hardy - we're in the middle of a draught and it looks healthy as ever.

Count me in also. I plan on growing (small scale) again this year. Also would like to see it on the Non Boating tech side so I can go back and maybe ask questions without hunting for it.

Re: Growing food

Neumanns - everyone I know that does heirloom tomates got the seeds from a tomatoe they bought at the store. I've never seen a fully red heirloom, only some with red splotches on them, mostly yellow, orange and green when ripe.
