I read on a previous post about grounding a fuel tank? Not to be stupin but how?

I took my tank out and the only wires hooked to it where the sending unit wires...

Should there be something else?

Re: Grounding a Fuel Tank

My boat has a wire(ground) that goes from the the sending unit to the back of the filler to get rid of static. I have that others also run a wire to a grounding bar or negative post on the battery.

You were probably reading about an aluminum fuel tank. Plastic fuel tanks don't need to be grounded. If your fuel tank is a non-conductive material, you're ok. If it's metal there should be a 1/4-inch tab for a quick-connector welded to your tank somewhere, or something like that to connect a ground wire.

Re: Grounding a Fuel Tank

my old tank (aluminum) - one wire from fuel fill to a tab onto the tank. next wire from toab on tank to neg side of battery.

i didnt want to have to ground again after i found pits on the inside of my tank. so my solution was:

new tank (black plastic) - i also bought a new fuel fill set up that is all black plastic with red plastic cap and requires no grounding.

i guess after all my research i came to the conclusion if you have metal it has to be grounded. i also learned some technical jargan, since it is not connected to the ground it is called bonding.

here are the sites i used.

http://www.uscgboating.org/alerts/alertsview.aspx?id=27

http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/boatbuilder/fuel/183-572.htm

Thanks! Yea it is a aluminum tank but there are no tabs on it .. except on the new sending unit I just bought...

Could I run 2 wires from that, one to the gauge and one to the neg terminal ? ?

kinda thinking out loud here. but if your sending unit has a spike in it from the ground going through it. would you fry it so you cant get a reading to the guage.

if i was to do it. i would take it to a place and have a small tab welded to it. mine was only a 1x1 thin guaged metal with a hole in the middle to attach the wires to.

Fry ! Ok I guess I can run a wire from one of the screw holes that attaches it to the floor since these are aluminum tabs that are welded to the tank! That should work! Right ?

Did the tank have 2 wires on it before? Because the sender usually only has 1 wire going back to the gauge and the other one is the ground.

Re: Grounding a Fuel Tank

take a continuity meter/multi-meter.. go from the ground sending unit post to anywhere on the tank.. if'n it reads,, your good..

just one wire to the sending unit is all that's needed for the tank..

Yea it had the center post of the sending unit with a yellow wire and on one of the screws holding the sending unit in the tank their was a black wire that went to a ground on the trim pump!

So I guess that would be my ground huh ? Duh !

LOL ! Thanks
