Well, it took a couple of months, but I suppose it was only a matter of time...depthfinder was working fine (showing 20-25 feet), I was within the marked areas, but close to the fringe...next thing I know, the boat lurches and the engine raced..I was in 2 feet of water, and spitting sand...quickly had the 2 passengers in the back move to the bow with the other 2, and then shut her down and raised the trim....we pushed back into the channel, everyone jumped back on, and I checked the leg for damage...the prop was slightly scratched, but everything else appeared to be fine, so I fired her up and cautiously began to move forward...everything again seemed fine, and I was good to go...my question is this...should I be checking anything in particular to ensure that nothing was damaged? I was moving at about 25 mph, and doing @ 2400 rpm at the time of the grounding...5.0L VP, carbed...

Re: Grounded!

You should be fine. No oil leaking from the prop area? It wouldn't hurt to pull the drain plug on the outdrive just to make sure there isn't any water in the oil.

Sounds like all you've damaged is your pride. ;)

Re: Grounded!

Sand in the cooling system may be an issue (especially FWC), it'll get sucked up & possible damage the raw water pump and rest in the heat exchanger - I learnt the hard way!

Aldo

Definitely ate a little crow, Achris60! :D Had her out all weekend, and all is fine..no oil leaks, temp changes or changes in handling...Dunaruna, did you have to replace your raw water pump? Any suggestions for checking to ensure that I haven't sucked sand in?

Re: Grounded!

Paul,

I've got a FWC system. After I grounded it (sand, seaweed) I experienced overheating above 2000rpm. I reversed flushed the raw water system and got heaps of stuff out. I pulled apart the heatexchanger, oil cooler and raw pump, still full of sand. The pump was O/K but I caught it early, with time, sand will destroy anything.

I was surprised at the amount of sand & seaweed in the heat exchanger (probably from years of neglect). I now have a raw water filter in line.

Aldo
