ground wire from lower unit glowing orange

Yamaha 150 has a wire coming from top of lower unit and mounted to the outside of the motors mid section. As I was loading my boat it was glowing orange and smoking. My friend has a merc with what seems to be the same wire. He did not have this problem. What is this wire (ground) and why was it glowing?

you've got the wrong forum and a big problem. Sounds like a dead short.

its not a ground wire, its a bonding wire.
you have a bad negative battery connection somewhere, most likly the trim unit.
you dont have a short.
go find the bad ground connection.
the bonding wire isnt capeable of that much current.
fix the wire that is.
