grinds between forward and reverse

my 650 merc makes a grinding noise when going from nutral and forward or reverse, is this a problem or normal and if it should not do this should I rebuild the lower unit or replace it?

You are not shifting fast enough. The ratcheting noise is due to clutch dogs grinding against each other. Shift with authority and stop tryiing to "slide" it into gear. The resulting clunk rather than the chatter is what you are trying to achieve.
