Motor is 2014 F115 with 125 hours. I changed the water pump and put everything back together. Ran it on the muffs and it pumps water very well. However, when I shift from Forward or to Reverse, i get a short grinding sound. Is there something I did wrong when putting it back together. I am not a mechanic but not a bad take it apart put it back together again guy.

I had the motor and lower unit in N when I took it off and put it back on. Is it possible that I did not put it back together properly? Any help would be appreciated.

Try not easing the shifter....just a good, firm clunk to engage the clutch dogs.....don't baby it into gear....

Is this a new-to-you motor, or are we talking about a boat that never did this before when you used it?

My DF90 Suzuki "grinds" when you slowly push it from neutral into gear. When you get it into gear quicker, there is no grind. That's how it is supposed to work.

Not a " little faster "-----You can not damage anything with a quick firm shifting motion !!

I think of it like a clutch. You don't necessarily need to go from 0-100 in a split second, but don't ride it. A firm shift as racerone stated.

When shifting always allow a moment for your motor's idle to settle back to a good steady minimum (around 750 RPM's) before a good firm " clunk" into the gear of your choice. Remember, these gears are always in mesh....the only things engaging are just the clutch dogs for your gear of choice.....
