Grinding when putting in gear

I just purchased a 2006 Honda 40 hp (4stroke)with power trim. It has not yet touched water. We attached the hose, started it up, waited 5 minutes, and went to put it in gear. It did nothing but grind. I called the dealership that we purchased it from (and who installed it), and the mechanic said we had to get it into gear quickly. I am not comfortable with this. I owned a 40 hp force and grinding was never part of boating. Any ideas

He's right! Don't baby it or you'll grind it.

Re: Grinding when putting in gear

Thank you for responding. I have since called the Honda rep line (770-497-6400). They said it did not sound normal-there should be no grind when putting it in gear, and we needed to get it back to the dealership and have them look at it. The linkage related to the choke is not right, and they have to adjust it anyway. The paint on the lower shaft seems to be a different color (duller) so I am feeling a little uneasy. I will post our outcome.

It should pop into gear without too much effort, but as BF130 says, don't be overly gental with it. A lot of motors will make a little noise when going into gear, but a hard grind is not right.

Hopefully your dealer can take care of this and remove your doubts.

pop in into gear quick and you will have mininum
of grinding.
my bf50 will do that as well unless you put into
gear quickly.

Re: Grinding when putting in gear

Thanks to everyone who commented. I took it to the dealer and they set it up in the tank. They popped it into gear and there was no grind. It appeared that I was not popping it in quickly enough. (It was stiff-not like my previous Force 40). I had it out Friday, following the "break-in" procedures. It is really a sweet motor.
