Hello all, 19 yr boat owner, new to the forum. I own a Seaswirl Spyder 208, it has the OMC King Cobra 454 (7.4L). I bought this boat from my brother in law in 1999 and he was the original owner since new in 1992. Despite the bad press I’ve read about, this boat has been completely trouble free......but now I have a problem. Boat cranks right up, but I have a significant grinding noise on the front side of the engine and it’s accompanied by vibration. Noise and vibration increase with RPM (I know, big surprise). Does this sound like a known problem?

Gotcha' started on your own topic. Welcome aboard.

Are all of your pumps and pulleys turning free? I'm wondering if it might be something simple like a circulation pump.

Yes, the pulleys are turning free. Charging at 14 volts, no overheating. I think I’ll probably have better luck by posting a video. Apologies on the piggyback.

pull the drive (you should be doing it every years for inspection anyway). that way you can tell if the issue is drive or motor.

Thanks to SK!!

Now, it's also a good idea to also post your model number but I suppose you don't have a LOT of choices in model but here's possibles.....knowing this points to the right parts list and illustrations etc, found here:---> http://epc.brp.com/

744CPEAMH 1992
744DPEAMH 1992
744DPPAMH 1992

744APERGD 1991
744APERGF 1991
744BPERGD 1991

Now having said all that, (as suggested above) you'll need to remove the drive and see if it's the culprit.

Vibration in a stern drive is frequently U-joint/gimbal bearing related and removing it allows you to run the engine without all that stuff also turning.

Regards,

Rick

It was the Gimbal bearing. Have new bearing and multiple seals in hand.

Woo Hoo! :thumb: :thumb: Glad you found the problem!

Now if you don't have one, and you want to do all your own maintenance, now would be a good time to obtain an OEM OMC service manual. (Not SELOC OR CLYMER.....they're frequently wrong)

You have a rare drive and possibly a No longer Available (parts) ignition system. You definitely need to be using the correct manual for your model.

Definitely some parts are no longer available. I’m familiar with Clymer, I have an 84 V65 Magna motorcycle and Clymer produced some useless service manuals for that too. How is Clymer still in business? I’ve downloaded the OMC Service Manual but I’m considering buying a hard copy, guess that means I’m old. I actually have the Owners Manual, in almost pristine condition, good for the most basic stuff.

It's definitely harder when the manuals aren't right. The good thing is you have an engine that you can easily change to a different ignition system if your "$nitfire" ignition fails!

I actually had a local guy buy an old distributor from me that was on my previous OMG 460 to put on his 1990 OMG 460 (same drive as you.......same ignition too)

Also, since your drive is VERY rare there are a LOT of people out there in radio land that want a good used one! So if you decide you really LOVE your boat, you could sell the drive and transom mount and either go to a Volvo transom mount + SX and/or Duoprop drive or do what I did and put a Bravo III in it.

I was able to sell all the OMC "stuff" (over about 3 years) for nearly $3500 and I only gave $5000 for the 1997 7.4 Mercruiser engine, transom & B3 drive (complete package)

Now I have a boat with an engine and drive package that is worth more (by itself) than the entire boat with the same engine installed!!!

I guess that's a downside of having an old boat but the good part is it's paid for, the insurance is much cheaper and the registration is a lot cheaper!
