Lube in lower unit came out a kind of grey, milky color. I assume this means water where it shouldn't be. ( '75 johnson 50 hp) Other than drain/fill screws, what are the most likely suspects? If I try to fix myself, do I need special tools, and is it a do-it-yourself project. Just rebuilt carbs without much problem.

Before jumping to conclusions, replace the drain/fill screw seals and run it again and see if it cures it. Then take it from there. Could be propshaft seal if it still has water in it. Did you see water droplets come out when you drained it? Try the screw seals first.

UPDATE: just went out and looked, found no o-ring on lower bolt. Hope that's the problem. Saw no water in lube, just came out different color than it went in. If water was in lube, is there anything I need to do, other than refill and replace o-ring?

Refill and replace both (O) rings and you should be fine! Good Luck,
