I have a 85 mercruiser 140. I took out for first time, running at about half throttle the boat slowly slowed to an idle had to idle back in. Would only rev to about 1100 rpm. Suspect the fuel pump. Tested with fuel pump tester got no reading but was still idling but running rough. Took fuel pump off and pumped it on bench and there is a little green goo coming out of sight tube ( sight tube is green about 4 inches up ) I have the old style pump with the bowl facing up. Im assuming that means the pump is bad? What is the green stuff?

The pump uses a double diaphram for safety, the green or other color goo or other color is stuff that has built up over time from moisture and time. The pump has failed, just needs replacing

Green goo is probably a mix of oil & gas. Pump is bad & needs to be replaced (not sure if you can or if it's worth rebuilding with a new diaphragm). A new pump is probably around $50.

I had the same thing from the boat sitting! I cleaned mine up and now its fine my pump is still working. Sight tube is more of a safety thing shouldn't be gas in it.

Thanks for all the input ordered new $134.00. Plus found rebuild kit for old one $25.00. Wont hurt to have a spare on hand in case aftermarket one doesnt last long. Going to keep the boat a while after an all winter stringer and floor replacement. You guys helped me alot on everything ive done to boat. Thanks again!!!!
