I was foolin' around the shallows the other day and got my little microlite tackle out to play with the sunnies and crappies.

I tried a new bait for the first time, and was blown away. It was a Cubby Mini-Mite, with an orange head and brown body. Little 1/32 oz. jig with a unique tail that moves in an amazing way in the water.

My brother-in-law was with me. He fished with earthworms on a tiny jig head and I fished with this artificial. I caught at least twice the number of fish as he did.

Anyhow, just wanted to mention this. Google will bring it up, along with places to get 'em. I just bought out the local Gander Mountain's stock, since I'm taking 6 young kids fishing soon, and this will save me from baiting hooks, I hope.

Here's a picture of the thing. The little expanded end on the tail is what makes it so wiggly. Actual size:

CA, did you fish it under a bobber or just cast and retrieve?

Re: Great panfish lure

It worked both ways. Under the bobber, any little wave action wiggles the tail enticingly. The little sunnies and crappies don't seem to be able to resist it.

You can also flip it out and retrieve it like any jig. I caught several keeper crappies that way. It seemed to get the bigger fish...probably because I was working it near the bottom.

However, at 1/32 oz., it really takes a microlight rod and 2 lb. test mono to cast the thing past the end of the rod.

I found an outstanding microlight rod at Mills Fleet Farm in Oakdale the other day. 4'6" long with an extremely light tip action. $7.99.

Perfect for this kind of fishing.

BTW, they make this thing in about 20 colors, including some glow-in-the dark ones for you night fishermen. So far, I'm sticking with this brown one. You can also order replacement tails for them...which is a good thing, since the complete unit in a tube is over $1.
