Great, my marina is closing.

I got a letter from my marina today. After 20 years in business they're closing the doors. I had noticed for the last year or two they barely had any new boats on the lot. I guess the economy takes out another business.
I live about 100 miles from the next closest marina so this will really make getting parts and repairs more difficult. We're not really near any water here so having a marina at all (Is it a marina if they just sell and repair boats and accessories?) was kind of unusual.
The letter mentions that their 2 best technicians want to start a mobile service business and it gives their names and numbers. I guess I'll give that a try.
I really liked dealing with the owner. He knew by name whenever I walked in the store even though he only saw me once or twice a year.

I always hate to see local businesses close. Even when it is due to the owners retiring it seems like a sad thing. Hopefully the technicians will be able to deliver good service, and start building up good relations with the marina's former customers. Even though I love Iboats and the good prices found on the interweb in general, I try to spend money for parts and services when it's practical with my local boat shop. They call me for heating and air work, so I call on them when I need help with our boats. Seems only fair.

Looks like one is closing in Monroe, MI, as well.

Yea, saw there CL listing. 100 boats up for grabs.:blue:

I have bought from a local marina one time. On line about 15 items. This site really helps DIY and on line purchasing.

Re: Great, my marina is closing.

We had one marina with a huge dock break loose in a rare flood, and it floated downstream and under a bridge. A bunch of houseboats and cruisers were badly damaged. Two years later, a tornado came by and picked up another huge dock at the same marina--including boats and 125,000 lbs. of concrete weights.

They hung it up.

Right now, we only have 3 marinas, one of which has gas pumps and no diesel pumps. I have a buddy with a 27' bowrider with an 8.2 engine that gets 2 mpg. He has to drive 20 miles to get gas--and 20 miles back to his dock. It's all self destructive to consider having to go so far for gas--and get home with relatively little gas left @ $4.44 per gallon.

I have diesel delivered by truck. Only restriction is 100 gallon minumum in our case. Often the price is equal or less than auto service station price. Worth a phone call or two to see if your buddy would benefit.
