Great Article On Tongue Weight

Finaly, I read a great article on boat trailer tongue weight in the December/Jan 2005 issue of BoatUS Trailering magazine. The bathroom scale solution/debacle has been replaced (finaly IMHO) with a digital trailer hitch they highlighted senzbar!!! About time.

Interesting--I thought the bathroom scale works well with tongue wts under 300 lbs or so. That looks more accurate for sure.

It's pretty expensive if you only have one trailer to setup.

I think buying a device to check your tounge wt is rediculous. I will just use the tried and true method of a bathroom scale. However I dismount my towbar and weight that. Its better because I weight right at the ball. and then subtract the drawbar wt. Works every time.

Too high tech for us backwoodsmen here in the Med.<br /><br />We just use biceps to lift the trailer hitch and guess the rest. Seems to work, but not as scientific as you guys. Maybe you have specific regulations to abide by, but here it's more or less every man for himself.<br /><br />Ciao

Hey, I used bathroom scales to check the cg on my ultralight plane and it worked fine. If you need bigger scales for tongue weight try your local small airport...many FAA guys have larger portable scales to weigh planes. Scales are everywhere...recycle dumps, moving/storage companies, etc.

Blackfin guy,<br /><br />I got the article in my private reading room and it is very good. Not just in relation to the new scale but to the importance of knowing what your proper weight is. The article points out how the tongue weight can change dramatically when you go from a full to an empty tank. I have this problem and have to move gear around to accomidate.<br /><br />A good little magazine if you only have an hour to burn. I look forward to getting this in the mail.

Hey BFGUY Thanks for the post. I didn't see the article but I have a daughter just starting to show her horse so the more I can teall her about keeping her trailer loaded right -- tires checked etc -- the better in my book. <br /><br />I feel the same about my boat I want to know everything I can when cruising.

If I am going fishing the tongue weight will have to be ok. <br />I got two trailer hitches one on the bumper one coming from the trailer hitch. <br />If you have a trailer hitch like mine you can buy a ball mount that will raise or lower you trailer ball.<br />That way you can adjust your tongue weight some.<br />Just keep it reasonable not do to much as to make it to unleveled or unsafe.
