Has anyone ever vacationed on Great Abaco Island? If so, please share any wisdom.

We are just looking for a place off the beaten path- Not too touristy but with reasonable
access to groceries and perhaps some good places to eat.

We will not be boating to get there. I see some posts regarding boating to there. Has
anyone ever flown in to vacation?

ANY info would be appreciated

Thanks

Re: Great Abaco Island Vacation

I would consider Hope Town. You can catch a cab from the airport for a couple mile trip to the Aubury Brothers Ferry, which will take you to the little island. Hope Town is really cool. Last time I was there (4 years ago) there were about 6 working vehicles. Small enough to walk or rent a golf cart or bicycle.

Great Guana Cay (prounounced key, don't be too much of a tourist) is a good spot. Check out Nippers, and try to catch Barefoot Man singing some night. He is a legendary white guy that sings Island Music at it's finest. The Jimmy Buffett of the Carib.

I've spent many a weeks in the Abacos....Enjoy yourself as I have.

Good Luck!

Thanks a bunch Sasto!

I told Deck Swabber 58 last night that if anyone would know, it'd be you!

I'll check it out. I was looking at rentals on VRBO and
was pleasantly surprised at how low some of the rates are, compared to
other places in the Bahamas.

If we end up there, we'll keep ya posted

Thanks again,
Grannyd

Re: Great Abaco Island Vacation

I'm no expert by no means, grannyd. Some of us just are looking for a "real" spot with "real"people.

I had to sift thru many a spot to find one that suited me. If your in the same ballpark as my friend, Swabbie. Set on a flight to Grand Abaco?.....Hope Town would be my choice! Heck, we were invited in the grade school for a tour and talk..after we finished our Kalik!

There are many other Cays (keys) in the Abacos.....Depends!...Takin' your Lady? Little romance? Single? Nightlife? Daylife" Both?

Good Luck!

Well.....I've never been to the Abaco Islands but I would definately listen to THE CAPTAIN OF THE CARIBBEAN. (AKA Sasto)
But have you considered the Turks and Caicos? Salt Cay (pronounced key) is a really special place. Especially if you want to get off the beaten path.

Hey grannyd maybe we should hook up and go together, something tells me we would have a really great time?!! :D

Accommodations would be for Swabbie and me. No resort type stuff. Definitely "real".

Just a bed, bath, kitchen, grub and some quiet time. No bells and whistles for us. Some hiking,

biking, swimming, sight seeing-stuff we can do by ourselves is just fine. Chaise lounge with a book,

looking at the water, ALWAYS good. Low key and quiet. Abaco may be filed away til next year, shooting

for Salt Cay again. Gotta see the whales. We're still in the planning stages but I think Abaco Island is in

our future so anything you'd like to share will be appreciated. GO 'EERS!!!

Thanks,
Grannyd

ps thanks for turning us on to Salt Cay--the perfect place for us:)

GO 'EERS!!!

You two are killing me! Took me awhile to determine the relationship. I thought Swabbie was hitting on you. ;)

It's really difficult in finding a place like Salt Cay in the Abacos, at least the islands I've been on. The closest would be Man-O-War Cay. Lots of history in boatbuilding there, was very interwesting to me. I took a long bike ride from Marsh Harbor to Crossing Rocks, really cool spot.

Y'all have a good day.......and....Go 'EERS!:D

Hope my little practical joke didn't just increase the cost of that charter fishing trip we're going on with you one of these days.

Well....we pulled the trigger. We're going back to Salt Cay to see the whales, we missed them last year. :)

Captain, you mentioned on another thread about a 6 month captain's job in the Turks and Caicos?

We will be there from March 7th to the 16th.

Re: Great Abaco Island Vacation

The trip to TCI is still up in the air. The boat is sitting in Ga and the owner became ill. I spoke with him a couple days ago and he still has plans for me taking his boat there. Just not sure when.

Things are heating up here. I picked up another boat, a 30' Boston Waler, to maintain and look after. We are planning on some charter fishing. Not much, once a week would fit me.

Where are you flying out of? I would like to take Kimi there someday, if the boat doesn't go. The sight of houndreds of Humpbacks is a sight to be seen!

I sent grannyd a PM. Don't know if she knows what to look for.

Have a good day, my friend!

Can't wait.

We're flying from St. Louis to either Charlotte, NC or Miami. Haven't bought the tickets yet.

Hey, shoot me a price on either a one way or roundtrip charter on the Andrea C. :D
Their are four of us going!

Great to have a Caribbean buddy!

Let's us see.....We fuel up here ($6,000) and head to Grand Bahama for the night. Customs ($300), dockage ($150) and a meal for 6 ($250). Weather permitting we head out the next day to Eluethra for dockage ($150) and another meal (($200) Captain and crew need to eat well. Weather permitting, we head out to San Salvador for the night ($150) and food ($250). We will fill her up ($4,000) and head to Provo the next day. (It may take a week for this, depending on the weather). We may be lucky with the weather and get there before your weekend is up. In Provo we need to check in ($250) and dock for the night ($150). Going to need more fuel ($3,000) Drop you off at Grand Turk.............

Capt. and crew just another few thousand.

Still wanna go????;)

Re: Great Abaco Island Vacation

You are going to be the Swabbie of the Caribbean. Good deal, my friend.

One good thing about TCI, is it remains a good healthy environment. I can tell stories of her and my adventures. Not so much of the other Islands. I made a couple gwod phrienz (good friends in West Indian) there.

Have fun, Swabbie and grannyd!

Thanks Captain.

It really is a special place. Wouldn't it be a strange twist of fate if we met up there this spring?
