Johnson service manual says use oil, But if you are doing V4/6 I would put impeller in cup/housing. If you put impeller on drive shaft and slide housing cup over the inpeller it will ruin o-ring seal between housing and plate.

Hey, Fabbit. You probably do no harm if you use oil or grease, the book wouldn't tell you to do something harmful. A lot of us old-timers don't like to put petro-oils in a water system, but do want the impeller lubricated on those first few turns. Thus, we recommend soap (Dishwashing liquid. My fave is Dawn). Some recommend Vaseline, but it is a petro-oil.

Red sky at night. . .
JB

The reason I said mild soap and water is because some people are capable of changing a w/p impeller but may not know all the ins and outs of marine engines , and fill the whole dam w/p housing with grease (I've seen this )and then they can't figure out why it won't pump water .Yes a little light grease or oil is fine , I probbly should have not said never, I was just thinking of the inexperienced boater.
