There is a grease fitting in front starboard side of the upper gear housing. does this grease the gimbal bearing?
Engine is 5.0 liter OMC, drive is King Cobra
I know on the regular Cobras the zerk fitting for the gimbal bearing is on the starboard side of the (gimbal housing). I've looked at the Kings and thought I noticed the zerk fitting on the port side of the gimbal housing, but I'm not positive
Hello
some early cobras had a zerk fitting for tyhe shift shaft bushing on the stbd side of the gimbal housing. the fitting against the transom on the stbd side transom shield assy is for gimbal bearing lube. the only real external problem with the cobra was the lower pivot pin bushing would seize the pin and swivel the pin in the housing. the fix is simple and quick. the repairs are way expensive
good luck and keep posting
I was curious so I got the manual out and the Cobras zerk fitting for the gimbal bearing is on the starboard side of the gimbal housing, and for the KING cobra's the zerk fitting for the gimbal bearing is on the port side of the gimbal housing. Solec manual 85-95 (covers all cobras and king cobras)
hello
dude tylin. dont get to hooked up on the manual. a customer of mine had a 460 ford in a bayliner with a sliding clutch king cobra and the gimbal bearing lubed on the stbd side, I remember cause I had to change the lube tube. remember there were 2 king cobras. cone clutch and sliding clutch.
Good luck and keep posting
Beg to differ there rodbolt but the only KING COBRAS were cone clutch. Regular cobras were sliding clutch dog. King cobra had 24 different shimming steps and a big pain in the azz
Rodbit,If you read my first post I said I observed a King and thought the zerk was on the port side. Since I once had a cobra, and still had a manual I checked it out for Digitaldav. We got his problem worked out and that was my only concern, not some albatros you once worked on
Hello
rodknocking in the late 80s there was a glitch in the cone clutch production and OMC beefed up the sliding clutch version and decaled it as a king cobra. was used in bayliners with 340 hp 460CID fords. I still work on one. and the old cone clutch I wont work on anymore. OMC would not support it then and nothing now. like you said. too much pain.
Good luck and keep posting
