I have just rebuilt the powerhead on my '84 Mariner 115 inline 6. I now have this grayish/brown greasey stuff oozing out from the water inlet and around the prop. The powerhead was spotless inside, including the exhaust housing. Could it be water mixing with the gas/oil? I am running a 25:1 mix for breakin. If cracked, does anyone have any ideas where? The spark plugs in #3 and #4 cylinders have a similar greasey film on the tips. I'm about at my wits end with this thing!!! Any help would be appreciated.

Thunder, When i rebuild a powerhead, I use grease to hold the needle and roller bearings in place while I assemble their cages. It takes a while to work it's way out of the motor.

If the grayish/brown stuff stinks, it may be gear oil from a leak. If it has no/minimal odor, it is likely 2 cycle oil, and is normal.

I also used needle bearing grease when I assembled it. Also, the grease seems to have no odor. I hope you're right, and it will clear by itself. Thanks for the input.

You didn't take off that(3rd) innermost plate around the exhaust ports, right?

-W

No, bolts wouldn't come loose. Didn't want to break anything. Why do you ask?

Becaue unless there an indication of an *existing* leak there, you only stand to introduce a new leak by screwing with it at all.

-W
