So I'm old school and if I'm traveling into unfamiliar territory I'll pull up Google maps and figure out the best route , then write my own directions on a piece of paper and study it a bit to familiarize myself, then head out... Occasionally I will use GPS navigation for the final few blocks or whatever... My wife ,on the other hand, solely uses navigation from start to finish anytime she's not exactly sure how to get there...I keep trying to tell her it's not good practice to rely totally on her GPS, simply because it's good to learn new roads on your own...
So, how do you guy's go about it...GPS, or figure it out on your own?

The Admiral and I went up to Tennessee a couple of years ago to stay at an isolated cabin. Followed the GPS right to the place where it told us to turn right and "You have arrived". Minor problem - In front of us was an gate into a farmers pasture and a big old bull daring us to try and get in.

Consulted the MapQuest instructions, backed out and went up the road about another mile or so and there it was. No bull and a nice log cabin to spend a few days relaxing.

I always use a map for backup, GPS has misled me for than once. So has MapQuest.

GPS all the way. I took two trips up to Georgia in the last year. One was 500 miles, the other was 250. And many "local" trips of 100 miles or less in my area. My phone GPS (HereDrive +) took me right to the door and on time, each time.

Trashed all my paper maps awhile back.

Google maps old school.  But I hear ya!

GPS with maps as my back-up. Most of the time the GPS nails it but they are definitely not perfect.

I use my iPhone GPS and an app called WAZE. It is updated frequently by users for traffic, police, etc. It can redirect you automatically.

I also use google maps, but after putting in the destinstion, I look at the route and review the turn by turn snd make sure it makes sense, especially at the end.
some times it has taken me to the wrong spot, but I can usually (I meaning my better half) figure iit out, :)

paper maps, understand the route, then use the GPS to let me know where fuel/food/rest stops, etc are.

I know how to use maps and charts, but I've been getting lazier, and lazier with the GPS though. Worse is that Google has gotten good enough that I don't always thing to bring a Garmin ... to places where the ole' cell phone don't get a read

I use Tom Tom most of the time. But the lady gets repetitious so many time, "In 500 hundred feet make a right turn, turn right next 100 yard, turn right now, turn right now, when you get a chance, make a U turn and go back"!

GPS for finding specific locations or addresses. A glance at a map for general directions. I figure I should be able to drive to the state or general location within the state by remembering the map and depending on road signs. If I cant drive from say SC to the Black Hills in SD with out a GPS I'm in trouble.:eek::eek:

I prefer the paper GPS, my wife uses the electronic one. The electronic GPS can be useful to find a specific address in an unfamiliar city or town but I don't need it to find larger scale features.

What is a paper GPS? A map? I don't even have paper maps in my cars anymore.

If I am going to someplace new that I haven't been there before, I do a little homework on the computer with Google Maps on there and recommendations of routes before I just jump in the car and use my phone or Nav system.

Yep, I do the same - always good to have a sense of where you're going. I also find it interesting to see the lay of the land, especially for places I have not been. Satellite and street view are great for IDing landmarks for the trip.

I admit though, I've been in a hurry and followed local turn-by-turn directions doled out by the nice lady. But I hate that..

We had some friends coming to our place in a remote area. We found out why it took them so long when they admitted their GPS was set to "no-tolls".

On the good side, the travel service in my new car, set to "shortest" has shaved 14 miles off my daily commute - a great thing since I need to watch miles driven these days

LOL ... just learned about that on my most recent trip. It's a very cool feature.
I went to Germany last month and was too lazy to get a sim card over there. I just loaded up the maps the day before while I was on WiFi.
