GPS and a Guide

I understand that guides have their honey holes and wonder if after hiring a guide one would be out of line to use a personal gps to mark spots fished for future use. Is this something that is unacceptable, just do not want to make a total fool of myself but going to a new lake to me for a week and would like insite for one or two days then fish my own boat.

Yes, IMHO it is out of line. It's called-THEFT.

That guy probably spent years finding what/where works. Because of some electronic gizmo, you can steal that? One would argue that the lake is public property. Yes, it is, however, knowledge is not-YET!

That's the way we live today, hardwork/experience is "throw away". Open for the taking.

Wow! Two opposites. Theft is a pretty strong word DJ, if it was permissable I would have considered it a purchase of information of knowledge which occurs everyday. I lecture at many seminars (60 per year) and those people get my information and knowledge from hardwork/experience for a fee. I thought perhaps this situation would be the same.

DJ, Guess what I meant to ask was "Am I paying for the knowledge of where to fish." I will certainly ask before I do it.

I have waypointed spots that my guide took me to, but only after I asked his permission.

On some lakes/rivers/saltwater exact locations are easy enough to go back to without GPS, but on others a particular location is like the Lost Dutchman.

Always ask. If (s)he says please don't, then don't.

I know in the saltwater fishery this is a very hot topic. I have seen charter operations that had signs saying NO GPS ALLOWED. Have heard “stories” of captains throwing GPS’s in the water that came unknowingly on their boat. A honey hole is worth a lot to guide. I don’t suspect too many are going to take kindly to you trying to pinpoint it with a GPS. Just my observation.

I'd be embarrassed to ask, I assume it's a no-no. But I'd be surprised if a guide was offended at the question. But I wouldn't be surprised if he gets offended by you marking spots without permission.

But, I wouldn't hesitate to look for spots the guide took me to if I could find 'em by dead reckoning.

Try this, take a loaf of bread, and and drop a few crumbs every few feet...sorry, couldn't resist. :)

txswinner,

Yes, theft is a strong word. The whole premise of this is the word "PERMISSION".

You offer your knowledge free, that is your choice. I applaud you for it. You may be offering your knowledge as a marketing advantage, or out of the goodness of your heart. It doesn't matter. It was/is your choice as the OWNER of that knowledge.

The same rule applies, in my book, when it comes to guides.

DJ, If I am hungry for fish I go to the fish market, I hire a guide for use of his knowledge, lures to use, how to work them, what depths and how to find fish. All a guide has to sell is a good time and his knowledge, that is his service. I was offended by your theft usage but certainly your privilege to be so abrupt, but be careful if you come to Texas, calling someone a theif here will get your >>> whipped.

txswinner,

Abruptness is the way I communicate my opinions. Time is a factor.

I am not afraid to show my face in Texas. I can more than defend my words and myself. I think the folks in Texas are wonderful people with good solid values.

As mentioned, the key word is: PERMISSION.

No fights wanted, just my opinion.

I stand by, what I said.

Ive thought it over a little more now. The Lakes that I guide on are not big enough, and are natural lakes without places off shore to mark. I think it would be a nice gensture to ask first though.

Re: GPS and a Guide

lubedude, I would not consider doing without permission, just wanted to know if it was out of line to ask or would the guide think I was a jerk or crazy, that's all. If I wanted to "steal" the hole I would just follow the guide and pull up close enough to get reading. Not my purpose at all.

My guess is that if you ask and they allow you to bring a GPS and mark spots you will not be taken to very good spots. No guide is going to take you to their honey holes if there is a likely chance they will see you there the next day.

When you get to one of his locations that produce, mark a small "x" on the side of the boat. :)

Re: GPS and a Guide

If a gps comes on my boat, especially whenmusky fishing, if Im not asked I will politly tell the client no gps allowed, if Im asked Im more then happy to allow it, its all about some respect.

I had some clients out last week who wanted some musky after they had asked if it was ok I said sure, but after some time I was asked if I could help him mark other locations on the lake from my unit and I politely declined it.

Re: GPS and a Guide

Sounds like I can ask the guide for permission to mark with my gps and will not appear to be a complete jerk or idiot. Might not get to fish the really good spots. I understand how that could happen. I was taught as a kid to fish with a guide if possible for one or two days on any lake that is new to me. I use guides often.
