I now have a Garmin 198C GPS and I am thinking about adding a good bottom finder (maybe a Garmin 400C). I don?t like switching back and forth between screens and it is small when you start splitting screens. Is it pretty common to have both or do you have a better idea. Thanks

I believe that both is the way to go, dawg, for the reasons you give, among others.

You have the Garmin GPS. That is good.

For a SONAR, though, I prefer a Lowrance/Eagle for fresh water not too deep. For deep or salt water I like Furuno.

JB - which model # Furuno would you recommend? Thanks

Personally, I would settle for nothing less than a digital fish finder. The read just as well in 24" of water as they do in 2000' of water.

For a low to mid-priced unit the Lowrance HDS is one of the best out there. If you have a bit more money to spend it's pretty hard to be a Furuno FCV 620 with an Airmar P66 (transom) or B-60 (thru hull) transducer.
