Re: Oil drained out of top of outdrive

When you pull the lower unit that drains everything, you have to refill from the bottom until it runs out the top hole, at least that is the way it works on an Alpha outdrive.

What did I do wrong ?

Forgot the quad ring seal... :D (don't worry, you are not the first to do so)

The quad ring seal goes in between the upper and lower units, to seal the oil passage between the upper and lower. It's a funny looking Oring with 4 lips, 2 on top and bottom, probably $1 at the boat shop. Glue it in place with some bellows adhesive or weather stripping adhesive so it does not slip out of place when you are bolting the halves together.

Re: Oil drained out of top of outdrive

I had a similar problem with my 87 Alpha, I learned to put the shift lever in forward and then be sure the lower unit was in forward, that eliminated that problem. If pulling the complete Alpha they tell you to put in forward prior to removal, the 87 model you had to, but for the lower unit I don't think they tell you to put in gear first. My shift shaft was a hex shaft, I got an open end wrench that would fit the hex and used that to hold in gear until the hex engaged in the upper shaft, then slip the wrench out and close.

Well, got gears , now I am having trouble with timing . the 470 mercruisers will
not crank over right. They start to crank and they stop for a second and start again ,like they are out of time , but they finely start. I turn the disturber as far to the left as possible and it starts. This is the first motor I have seen that their is a front stop and a back stop so you would think it would be neutral half way between the stops but no matter where it is set it, it acts the same .
Any one got any suggestions ?
thank you

Don, I think you will get better answers to this question if you post up in the Mercruiser engine forum, the guru's on engines are there. What you describe sounds like timing but the fact that no where you put the dist it is still the same, unless the dist is 1 tooth off upon installation, that could advance the timing enough that you could not adjust between the stops you mention. Take this up to the engine section, I feel sure they can help there.
