I went and picked up that Merc 5 today and tried it out for a couple hours to start the break in before I go fishing tomorrow. I love it! Its so light, not bulky, I don't have to worry about it being too heavy on the bracket, and it is not nearly as noisy or smokey as I thought, even with the 25:1 mix now. I'm not sure how fast it pushed it at full throttle because I forgot my fishfinder with the more accurate speedometer because my main one doesnt register that low, but I'll bet it was around 7 or 8 mph and it wasnt real calm out either. If I'm stuck somewhere, all it needs to do is go 1 mph and I will get home eventually! Well hopefully I can get rid of the other one soon, a lot of people have looked at the auction. But I'm very happy with this one, and with the dealer. That engine looks so simple, I can't imagine much could break on it.

Good luck with the new eng. Its the best and cheapest insurance you con have (self insured) and you don't have to wait for "sea-tow"..

Re: Got my new motor today!

Well it passed the test today. Went trolling, it was a bit choppy too, and tons of boats. For those of you not familiar they open this sockeye season very rarely on Lake Washington in Seattle. Only has been open 4 times I think in the last 15 years. And this year today was the only day its open unless they extend it. So the whole lake is just one boat on top of another. And occasionally there are close calls, and this motor had enough power to get it out of the way and make a quick turn. And only used about a gallon of gas in the 6 hours I have used the motor already. Nothing wrong with that!

Congrats Dan M, I just put a 8hp merc(1997)on my boat at the start of the season.Even the wife was impressed with the versatilaty of it. You won't regret putting it on. Don't know if you use a cast net for bait out there, if you do the kickers a great way to sneek up on them.Being able to troll at 3/4 mph is awesome to!
