I finaly got my boat today. It is a 1974 15ft thunderbird runabout with a 1974 Johnsohn 70hp motor (70ESL74M). I will post pictures of it soon. I am taking the motor to have it profetionaly evaluated tomorrow. The fellow that ownes the joint already knows I will be doing the repairs myself and is giving me a list of things to do. He seemed like a nice lad when I spoke to him today so cross your fingers I should be pushing the water soon.

I know I have swarmed this area before. I was going to try doing the initial checkout myself however being this is my first time I thought I would get a pro's perspective.

going to have it looked over first to make sure the motor is worth rebuilding/fixing. Then I am ordering my manuals, parts, and misl tools. I plan on replacing all hoses, plugs, plug wires, and mabe a carb rebuild just to make sure these things are running extra good any other suggestions?

Make the carb rebuild/cleaning a priority if it has sat for any length of time....

The tags were uptodate but it has set for at least 7 months. I am making it a priority though. I figure the fule system needs to be reliable for the boat to be reliable. I do not wont to sit out on the lake for hours waiting for the insurance to get me a tow boat. I would rather not use the insurance I am paying for.

One quick question. I havent gotten my repair/service manual for this moter yet. This is my first time to have a boat of this type. I have not taken the motor cover off to look at the moter. I am pritty sure this is a two stroke but what oil mix will I be using with this and what

yes it is a 2 stroke. 50-1 6 gals gas - 16 oz tcw3 oil. not weed eater oil. i would seriously consider a new water pump, also. good luck!!

Re: Got my boat picked up today

Well I took it into the outboard doctor today. He will look at it today. We did take the cover off the moter and WOW someone triied using very thin speaker wire for the moter. He hand spun the moter and said he thought there was a eather a rough spot or a high spot. It also looks like there is some rust around the midle spark plug. He doesn't expect it to be good news. He is going to try to start it and do a compretion test. If it doesn't start he told me he was taking off the head/s and looking inside inorder to tell me what I am looking at as far as damage goes. He has also suggested changing out or rebuilding the carb, waterpump, ELECTRICAL, he will check out the rest and tell me what is happing. I hope it is not as bad as I expect. He knows I am on a buget and has said he will help me with installing a couple of parts for free if I have to do a rebuild. He expects the exam to take 2 hours but is only charging me for the first hour only. This guy is working with me very well. I am excidide to continue doing buisness with him. He will also be calling the local machine shop that works with boats and getting me a discount. I wish everyone did buisness this way.

Pray, cross your fingers, or what ever your good lucks are for me to only have miner problems.

PS sorry about the spelling I am tired and don't feel like spell checking.

Re: Got my boat picked up today

He stoped at a half an hour. Only charged me $30.00.

there was no compretion on the 2nd.

Pore spark pattern on number 3.

Starter is getting ready to RIP

He couldn't get one of the head bults off and figured it was a good time to stop and talk with me. He is unwilling to condem this engine. He said it could be a simple head gasket wich I doubt. He also has informed me that I can oversize only one cylender and leave the same alone>>> I have a hard time beleiving that you can have 2 stock and one overbore. Is this true? He said once I have the moter pulled from the housing and the bult free he will examing the innerworkings for free WOW I think I like this guy working on my boats. I forgot to ask him one thing though.

Do they make some sort of engine stands for boats or will I have to make an addapter?

Yes, you can overbore one cylinder and leave the other stock. More will be known when the cyl. head comes off.

Might want to check for water in the gear case before you go to far with the powerhead.
