Got gas?

I love reading these stories on iboats- so I've been anxiously awaiting an opportunity to share one myself.

2 weekends ago we were out on Lake Norman with my wife, 2 kids, my brother and his wife. It's a Saturday and a pretty busy day at the boat launch. We got there pretty early that day- so that we didn't have to worry about getting off the lake in the evening rush.

Nonetheless, we pull back to the dock... and tie her off. The kids, wife and sister in law- get off the boat so that my brother and I can load it up on the trailer and head home. It was a little busier than I had expecdted at 3:30PM, but something caught our fancy.

An older gentleman on his jetski (tied off at one of the docks)... trying to get it started. After messing with it for 5 minutes or so he gets his wife to back the trailer back down the ramp because he's realized he's out of gas. She does as she was asked... and not 2 minutes later... she's yelling at him because the truck is now out of gas.

My brother and I are now at the tie down getting ready to head home... I'm pretty busy getting everyting secured, but my brother (who apparently has a much kinder face than I) was standing beside the boat right where the lady and gentleman are headed. I knew what was coming so I just carried on as usual while my brother (big teddy bear that he is) agreed to drive the gentlman to his house (fortunately only a few miles away) to get a gas can- then to the gas station- then back to the ramp... so that they could (I hope) put gas in the truck... but something tells me that they might have put the gas in the jetski...

I don't care where you are from, that's funny!

I called my wife one time when I ran out of gas, long day on the road, mind on other things, oblivious to the needle plunging lower and lower on the gas gauge. She ribbed me and asked where I was at, 1/2 block from Bass Pro Shops... Her reply, "Where?, OK I'll be there in a bit". While sitting in the car I noticed a gas station about a mile away, well so did she... To this day she still brings it up. Wished I would have noticed the gas station before calling her. I would have gladly walked 2 miles in exchange for the "remember when....."

Re: Got gas?

When I was in HS, my mom had a 16ft tri-hull that we would take to the family cabin about 1.5hrs from home. We always gas up the night before we head out, so I assumed that mom took care of the fuel situation. We're out trollin' in the middle of the reservoir when she's gotta pee. No bucket in the boat, so we decide to head to the dock. Funny though, the big motor wouldn't start. She checks the gas can and can't push it, so its gotta be something with the motor. Luckily for us, my grandparents were just coming out to join us for a day of fishing and see us stranded. Gramps tows us back to the dock and instantly checks the tank.........bone dry. Mom says she couldn't push it and figured it was full. Nope, the tank was butted against the transom. If she had tried lifting or pulling the tank, she would've known the problem. Guess what I do now before I ever leave the driveway?

Re: Got gas?

Ran out of gas 1 time in a car. I had to go to the bank 40 miles away, then was going to drive the mile or so to the gas station. I ran out of gas when I stopped at the bank. Called AAA they brought me a gallon and was on my way. Now keep a money for gas in car at all times.

Re: Got gas?

Apparently I'm not the only person who runs out of gas. two stories come quickly to mind.

First- I was in Germany with the Army, and was cruising the autobahn on my motorcycle, when it started to sputter, out of gas. I switched to reserve and started looking for a gas station. Right after I passed the sign that said 500 meters to the gas station, the bike quit again. I coasted in to the gas pumps, absolutely out of gas.

Second story- Had an older pickup truck with a less than accurate gas gauge, when it read E there was still a 1/4 tank of gas left. Many times I pushed the envelope with that 1/4 tank, until I would run out and have to call my wife to come rescue me. Rather than fix the gauge, what I ended up doing was carrying a can of gas, and would use that to get going again so I could get to the gas station and fill up the truck and the can. Until. That 1 time. I ran out of gas (again) and reached into the back of the truck and pulled out-----an empty gas can. I had to call my wife to come rescue me once again, and have been reminded for the last 12 years about this unfortunate incident.

I haven't run out of gas in my boat yet, but my darling wife says that is only because I haven't used it nearly as much as I have my truck. But she's waiting.

back in the 1980's my old 1973 P/U gauge would drop to 1/8th tank then START TO GO BACK UP- I ran out of gas alot- coasted about a mile from 70mph to a gas pump-my 26ft Wellcraft had 95 gal tank and when needle said "E" I still had 20 gal left. When I sold it the needle was on "E" and thought why buy $5 marina gas to sell it. --yelp- ran outta gas on the buyers 2nd test run-- called some buds who brought us 5 gal gas & buyer still bought boat.
