I picked up a South Bend Ind. Johnson Motor Co. Outboard, Model A-25 , which is a 1925-1926 2 hp. Never quite had one this old, anyone have any tips for where to start. The owner said he tried to turn the flywheel over by hand and it didn't want to co-operate, and the prop shaft will turn a little. I have to go pick it up tomorrow, so I will know more then. It pretty much came off the "Free Motor Tree", for 25 bucks ;) Thanks Chris

That were my thoughts, will need some help with this one though. If not will still make a nice end table, lol ;) My wife hates my hobby.

Is that the motor you bought? I just saw that exact photo on eBay and the auction is still on.

Pull the plugs and fill the jugs with Kroil or PB Blaster. Try to budge it a little each day. If you're lucky, it'll come loose. Hardest part of those old vintage Johnsons are the coils, takes a while to find them if they're missing/toast. The carbs are a real hoot, too. But they are great motors. Good luck and keep posting.

Well, that certainly looks like a challenge. You notice the carburetor is missing? So are the spark plugs, probably why it's stuck if it's been out in the weather. But go for it and enjoy the experience. I just paid 10 times that much for an old Evinrude. And it was stuck too.

thanks for the tips guys. Yeah WBeaton, I called him up and he is going to pull the ebay ad. He lives in Beamsville so not that far away. I think I may need to expand the garage soon ;)

That should be a fun project. Looks like it might have a nice tank on it too. I've got a couple old LT's that look like the Blue Jays used them for batting practise.

Post an ad on the Maple Leaf Chapter of the AOMCI and you might get the parts you need locally. Cost to join is $15 and worth every penny. Good luck with it. I have the factory service manual that covers the "A". Drop me your email address in a PM and I'll send it to you.

Cool....

Here's the link to the motor club.

http://www.mapleleafchapter.org/

I joined when I was given my first motor. It's 1929 Johnson J-25 1.5hp.

Through the club I was able to get a service and parts manual for it. When I start to rebuild it, I broke one of the rings. One of the guys in the club had them, in the original package too as well as a complete gasket set and carb parts. All new old stock. Amazing....

Good luck...I hope you get it going. They are great little motors.

Donnie.
