well been fighting with getting bent tilt tube out.....finally got it out and the new tube 90% installed. now here's the deal, the trim cylinder is pretty much dead. it doesn't work at all, the tilt cylinder works fine though. and I can pull the rod in and out a couple inches freely. also the sending unit is busted, but i'll worry about that later. was seems to be wrong with the trim cylinder?
1977 Evinrude V4

Mikey,

That trim cylinder only works for the first few inches of travel with hydrolic pressure applied...and then the tilt cylinder picks up the rest. If you have the trim cylinder off, pull the rod out untill you get a little drag on it...Put your finger over the hydrolic fitting and try pulling it out the rest of the way. It should hold a vacuum. I bet you it is good....I rebuilt mine and thought the same thing.

I think I'll yank the TNT off the motor and maybe overhaul it with anything that's old and get it working right again. I'll try what you're saying Mark, but I gotta get the cylinder off first. I know what you mean, it only works for the first bit then tilt cylinder kicks in, things seem frustrating, but have been great learning experiences
