got a nissan 8hp NS8B-have questions

First what year is it? serial# 3b2-1 62729

Second-- It starts right up on first pull every time, Runs as long as I want it to in water tank...pees good and all previous owner said water pump was changed a year ago. Just seems to run ruff at idle and when given gas. I'm not to familar with outboards or 2 strokes so I'm not sure what is normal and not. I put new plugs when I got it and get spark on both. Compression is 90psi both cylinders. Planning on getting a service manual soon.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I want to make this little motor as reliable as possible.

"Seems to run rough" is a relative term. Take it into a dealer or have someone with some expierence listen to it, but it would not be uncommon to need to clean the carburetor if it has not been done in the last two years.

Any idea what year it is?

I'm going to clean the carb tomorrow and see if that helps...it's running like it's not getting enough fuel...also I noticed the fuel filter doesn't fill all the way up with gas...is that normal? I don't have to pump the bulb to keep it running.

You can call Nissan at 972-323-6003 to get the year. The fuel filter usually rides somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 full when the engine is running. And cleaning the carburetor means taking it apart and soaking it for three hours in a can of carburetor cleaner, then forcing air through it. Anything else is probably a waste of time.

I soaked the carb for 3 hours in seafoam and used compressed air to blow out ALL passages and the jets. Put it back on and started it and it still runs the same...starts right up but runs ruff at all rpms...the carb wasn't really dirty at all. The motor sounds like its missing.

While I had the motor running I took off the top cylinders spark plug boot and the motor kept running but got a little worse...I put that boot back on and pulled the bottom cylinders boot and the motor died immediately.

I'm thinking I've got something wrong with the electrical system...either a bad spark plug (the plugs are brand new) or a bad coil. Like I said before I'm getting spark on both plugs.

SeaFoam is not carburetor cleaner. It is too mild to remove deep hard deposits in the passages and chambers. You have to use a dedicated carburetor cleaner(comes in 1 gallon and 5 gallon cans) which is acid based.

Nissan 5 hp 4 stroke starting challenges

I have a 5 hp 4 stroke Nissan. New last year. Incredibly difficult to start. Choke out; throttle at different seetings. Seems to want to start but won't. Started easier today when fuel cap was left off. However, once running and fuel cap placed back on, engine ran fine.
Am thinking about using starter fluid, but seems like a new engine like this shouldn't need it.
Help, anyone?

New engines have a three year warranty. Take it into dealer and let them determine what the problem is.

Motor runs fine now it was the spark plugs like I thought. GURU maybe you should suggest isolating the easy stuff first before telling everyone to take their carb apart.

Your right...The next time someone, like you, says they have new plugs and have spark, I will simply assume that they don't and treat them as if they are morons by telling them to put in new plugs and to check and see if they have spark....

previous plugs were new...one plug apparently had a weak spark - 2 new plugs solved the problem. thanks GURU
