Walking through a thicket close to a road ... there in front of me was a buck! Yeah! But, he wasn't a legal buck ... have to have 3 points on one side and this was a big deer, but only a spike. Oh well, plug on ... the deer ran ... out to the road and across it! Thump! I get a call, "Hey, where are you?"

"I'm in the thicket."

"2 deer ran across the road from my house. One got hit. It is thrashing around."

"Okay, I will be there in 2 minutes to get it."

Yep, it was the spike I chased out of the thicket ... Game Commission came and gave me a permit to take it. Now hanging in the garage to age ... Improved my shot average! But somewhere there is a lady with a damaged car who is not happy with me!

Where I hunt up by Albany NY there is the same three point/ one side restriction this year. I had a large, dark 4pt walk up to me within 15 ft while I was leaning up against a tree and I reached out to shake his hoove. He didn't oblige and his first leap had to be over 20 ft. Hard not to raise the scope when you see um. Glad you have one to hang without a hole!!!

Congrats on the freebie aspect. Glad it wasn't your vehicle.:)

A few years ago they totaled one of my wagons when a nice 6 point (160 lbs) stuck his neck in front of the head light. He rolled down the side of the car damaging the fender and doors.:disgust:

I took the deer in to be processed and the guy said it was the cleanest road kill he had ever seen, only had a broken neck. Corn fed deer sure is tasty.:hungry:

A 5 point trotted up to me on the last day of the shotgun season this year. At 15 yards the trigger seemed to go off on its own. Still hoping to get one more during the black powder season:llama:

Does taking a road kill relieve you of your tag, or can you still fill the tag and have more table fare?

Re: Got a deer yesterday ....

Talking to my friends in MI and MN, it seems the deer season was kind of slim this year. Lot's of quantity with low quality.

They blame it on the re-introduction of predators (Wolves, big cats, etc.) to the areas up north. Not saying that's bad. Actually going back to what it used to be. But, the re-introduction has been a bit one sided-advantage-predator.

That reintroduction ran all the BIG dear into the metro areas.

From what I'm told, the BIG ones are in subdivisions, not in the vast North Woods.

I can't disagree. A friend of mine was railing about hitting a monster 12 pointer with her Luxo ride (demolishing the front of her car) but she continues to feed them in her backyard. Duh!

She did not like my reference to deer as "Giant Suburban Woods Rats".

Does anyone concur?

Nope, does not relieve you of your tag ... filled a doe tag already, now have the buck tag left for the rest of this week. Then after Christmas it turns into a doe or 3-point-or-more-on-one-side buck tag with a muzzle loader.

Yes, Fleetwood, I concur. Some residential areas around here will let you hunt them hard with a bow. Makes it interesting picking shots where the deer will NOT run by certain houses ...

In MI you need to tag it. Either your own tag or one issued by the police. If there is no tag and it is in possession they could issue a poaching citation.

Last year I was able to get a doe that had been hit, not by me. It was still alive but hurt real bad, 2 broken legs. I waited for the police, took about a 1/2 hour. When they did show the "Expert" needed two shots from 5 yards to put it out of it misery.

Road kill comes pre-tenderized! That's what Pennsylvanians call road hunting.......:deadhorse::laugh::D

This one was primarily hit in the head/neck area. A couple broken legs, but down low. No meat was damaged! Yeah! Yep, road kill, it is just as good as shooting it! :tongue-new::hungry::thumb:

Only when the vehicle used isn't your vehicle. Only a couple of broken legs - surprised it still didn't run off.

Re: Got a deer yesterday ....

The deer population in my county (Suffolk) has soared to an estimated 35,000-40,000 on eastern Long Island. Over 700 car strikes last year with 270 people injured and one fatal injury. The gov't is conducting a sharpshooter cull this winter taking 3000 does here. They are setting up a butcher trailer and processing the kills and sending the meat to homeless shelters and kitchens in NY City. There are so many private farms and preserves that they know when to take shelter from the public hunting lands when the season opens. I see them swimming around the bay regularly now. Maybe I should monitor the police scanner and go grab a freshie like Art! : )

Here in VT you need to "pre-contact" the Game Wardens. They will put your name on a list for deer, moose, bear struck by a vehicle and not claimed by the driver. The driver actually gets first dibs on the animal.

Last month we had a moose/car accident and one of the deputies tried to secure some meat but the moose was given to a fire department for a future game supper......they were on the list.

Where I live (Saskatchewan) there were over 14,000 deer/moose/elk collisions last year. Nearly 50 million in damages and 9 or 10 deaths. And this is a sparsely populated place compared to the eastern U.S.
