Hey all
Any tips on getting rid of them? I live in the country & have a backyard with a grass lawn I know the best thing to do would be to do away with the lawn but the boss says the kids should have a lawn to play on!
Any help out there? Thanks

Re: Gophers?

22 cal should do it.

Ayuh,.... A Co/2 bb gun is good to 'bout 50',... after that, Ya, use the .22... Shorts are pretty Quite...

Use a leg-hold trap, 'n you can pop 'em at point-blank...

Re: Gophers?

Gophers depend on their senses to pick up threatening vibrations. Those spinning sunflowers on a stick/wire create vibrations that confuse/frustrate the critters so they move on. All you need is enough breeze to spin the spinners. Good Luck.

Gophers or moles? Many "vibrators" help but if you have moles then it is also a bug problem.

Since you live in the country, +1 on the lead poisoning. But the Rhodenator definitely gets the Caddyshack Award for subterranian chuckles.

I have heard that you can shape Plastic Explosives in a Gopher shaped model and place into the gopher hole itself. Not sure if this only works on golf courses or not, but it may be worth a try?

Re: Gophers?

There may be an old discussion on this here, try searching.

I used to use a 5 gallon bucket, 3/4 full of water covered with sunflower seeds floating on top. Single layer enough. Use a wood or stick ramp up to the lip. They climb up, think it's solid surface of sunflower seeds, jump in and drown. You can get several in one setting before you have to clean them out and re-set.

Then I discovered the Hav-a-heart traps. You don't even need any bait!! Their curiosity betrays them as they walk in and step on the trip platform. Door closes and they're trapped. Your decision after that. I dispatch them with a pellet gun at close range through the trap mesh panels.

Once you thin the herd, it takes a fairly long time before they start being a problem again. I just leave the trap sitting out by the wood pile for the next victim....

They were rabbit and squirrel shaped, and they didn't even work. After thoroughly destroying the golf course, the gopher came up, coughed out some smoke, and started to dance.

We had a mole problem at the school I used to work at. Gardner went out with a bunch of road flares and set them off and shoved them in half their holes. Then he sat on his tail gate with a 6 pack and a 22 and smoked them as they came out.

Re: Gophers?

Wow, thanks all!
These are pocket goghers, I have had problems with mole's but not to much
I have fond memories of my dad sitting on a 5gal bucket waiting for the gopher to stick his head out with his 22cal when I was a kid.
I've tried the vibrators, repelent & poision none seem to work. I've had luck with the traps (The green ones that were mentioned) but latley the gophers have just plugged them up with dirt. Yesterday I tried a road flare, I'll see if it worked I guess.

Bury the end of a metal dryer vent at the entrance to the hole. Attach the other end to the tailpipe of your truck. They just go to sleep. Trust me this really works.

Re: Gophers?

I just take a 20lb propane tank with my weed burning, stick the weed burner end down a hole and let it flow for a while, then drop a lit match down the whole, makes a muffled boom, no gopher problems for at least a year, of course if they are close to the foundation of the house, do this at your own risk!
