guys i'm not looking to spend a fortune but i need to pick up a good ship to shore radio for my boat. The one in it now works, but for some reason the speaker is messed up..i cant raise the volume on it..so instead of fixing it i'm just gonna get a new one.

i boat on lake champlain and dont plan on any ocean boating...so its range doesnt have to be too great...i have an almost new antenna on it allready.

give me some suggestions and a good place to buy.
thanks

Re: Good ship to shore radio??

I installed a Uniden UM525 with an 8' antenna and have been very happy with it. Not that I use it all that much, but it is a comfort to know it's there when or if needed. I paid about $160 for the radio on Ebay with no shipping charges. If I recall, the antenna was $40 and the swivel mount I needed for the antenna was another $25. I also installed a stereo and used a Shakespear signal spliter for FM reception using the same antenna.

By the way, the guy I purchased everything from is Happy Iguana Marine Electronics. Great to deal with.

Re: Good ship to shore radio??

Although one has to remain careful and vigilant, I've actually seen some interesting deals on ebay regarding these radios. I picked up a lot of 3 broken base radios for 15 bucks. I got two to work immediately with nothing more than a soldering iron and the 3rd, well it was old and big and heavy and although it turned on and made lots of noise on transmit and receive, it was just such a beast you couldn't even check parts on it. It remained dead. One of the two I fixed has recently gone out, but the other one, the newest one with auto squelch and a bunch of nice features on it, a Shakespere radio, is used as a base radio from our camp still today, and it works just fine. The transmit volume is a little low because the mic that is on it isn't the stock mic, but it's still nice and puts out the full 25w.

i'm most likely going to pick up something new....i'm not someone to spend 50 bucks when i could have spent 70 and have it last that much longer....i've also always gone by the way that i wont buy electronics off ebay. You never know what your going to get. And a radio is something i dont want failing on me if i'm broke down in the middle of the lake in the middle of the night!

I bought an ICOM M302 radio on line, and a Digital antenna from Iboats last year. My set up works great. ICOM is a top rated radio along with Standard Horizion. Ditigal is a nice antenna made in the USA. Digital is the brand name.
