good or bad motor

If anyone has or had a 1975 50hp.merc 4c. motor can they leave their oppion. good or bad, and what to watch out for. this site has sure saved me alot of time and money Thanks Don

Watch out for.. Early Mercs that have not had the L/U off for many years may experience driveshaft stuck in Crank (Not stainless steel) also some water escaping from around plugs (water cover corrosion) otherwise they are near bulletproof.

I ran a 1974 50hp merc for 6 years on my old boat.<br />those 4 cylinder motors idle great, used it to troll<br />for salmon.<br />It finally died after a zillion hours on it.<br /><br />Started pushing this "oily goo" out the exhaust ports<br />i think it got water in the cylinders, so i parted it off.<br /><br />Check the drive shaft. if they are carbon steel they will freeze up in the motor unless you have the lower unit off regularly.<br />you might be able to find a stainless shaft to replace it with.
