HI all,

All my outboard answers include the word "use good gass" Where do I find good gass? I live in St Louis MO and almost every Gass Station I fill up (Shell, 66 Phillips, and QT) claim they have good gass. I asked about ethenol and they said they dont use it in their fuel. I also cant find the sticker that says on the pump that it added 10% ethenol to the tank (BT gass stations say that)

Except for that do I start using grade 93?
Thanks
Zipp

I have run my outboards for a decade on whatever regular gas I acquire at whatever station I happen to be near. I have not had an issue. If you're concerned or will be letting the gas sit for a bit (months) between uses, treat every tank with Startron.

Marine StaBil is also a good option to treat gas that will be sitting for a few months. ezmobee's point is: use any 87 octane regular, don't fret about trivial differences.

Use Regular grade gas, (unless your manual says otherwise) put in some type of stabilizer if its going to sit for a few months and you'll be fine.

But that ethanol blended fuel does get rid of all the crap grandads fuel deposited in the tank over the years. So who to blame -- E10 or Grandads fuel and lack of fuel system maintenance. I too am a long time E10 user in my boats and never had an issue and when E-85 is 40 cents cheaper than E10 I run it in my Impala. No issues there either.

Re: Good Gas vs Bad Gass

Ethanol vs. non ethanol basically have pros and cons for each but basically = personal preference. Octane rating however, is important. If your manual says you need 91 octane then you need 91 octane not 87. The difference is that the higher the octane the higher the internal temperature needs to be for it to detonate and push the piston back down. Engines are designed to run on a certain octane. With few exceptions if you run an engine on 87 that is supposed to have 91 it will knock and not perform as well. If you run an engine on 91 that is supposed to have 87 you both waste your money and your engine will burn hotter internally that it was designed to.

I always buy gas from a large, very busy gas station so the fuel is most likely fresh....some out-of-the-way, po-dunk gas station might not refill their tanks but every 2 or 3 weeks, or longer!...gas could already be old when you pump it!

Plainly in agreement with that, many boaters here recommends to use the cheapest/lower octane rating which might not perform as it's best, better read your brand engine owners manual and go from there...

Don't stop at a station where you see a tanker filling up the stations tanks. These aren't the "final filter " days. Anybody remember ??

Very true. I can't believe the number of people who walk in and immediately try to blame E10 for their crappy lack of maintenance.
