Hey everyone,
I've been trying to research some decent fix mount GPS's for my boat. My friends all use Garmins, i'm not sure of which models and really like them. I want to be able to do the usual of setting way points of places to dock, routes to and from the launch. Pretty much just want it to back up the channel markers and other landmarks that i will use in my travels. I'd like for it to also be able to be upgraded with sonar because our lake likes to drop in level quite a bit by the end of summer.

Welcome to the board.
All GPS units I have seen you can set waypoints and routes.
Most if not all today also have WAAS error correction which increases from about 30 to about 9 feet.
How many waypoints and routes do you need? If used only boating and always in the same area then you may not need to many. If you go to many different area or also use in the can and hiking then you will need Quite a few.

I like Lowrance, Garmin, and Eagle units but Furuno is also very good. Many other brands also.

Things to look for in a GPS is screen size and how bright the unit is.
Is it big enough you can read it without taking you eyes off the water for too long?
Can it be seen in direct sunlight?
How many waypoints and routes does the unit have?
Are you also going to use it in the car and hicking or only on the boat?
Consider spending the extra for a color unit, I think it worth the difference.

If you want Sonar to find the depth or fish it gets more involved to find the right unit for your needs.

If you have the room and buget I think it is better to have seperate units.

Weather it saltwater or fresh water makes a big difference.
How deep of water you use it in is also very important.

List your basic needs and wants and many will give you some units to consider.

Re: Good fix mount GPS?

thanks for the reply!

here's a couple answers to your questions...
i'm definately wanting color screen..
I will be using it in fresh water only...
I'm on Lake champlain, so depths range from very shallow to a couple hundred feet..
I'd like to keep gps and sonar in one, not a lot of room on my boat to add a bunch of different stuff....
When adding waypoints i'm not gonna need a 1000, but i'd like to have as many as possible.

Whats is WAAS error correction?

Take a look at the lowrance lcx-27c with a 200khz skimmer transom mount transducer

Superb unit with GPS / Fishfinder and also you can add a radar system if you with at a later date.

Top of the line in my opinion.

Thanks
