Browsing craigslist this evening and ran across this temptation... Seems like a good deal to me. What are your thoughts?

Are Carb Kits still readily available for these old motors? Anythink specific to look out for that would make this motor junk and not worth the gamble? I will run a compression test of course. Other than that?

Thanks!

Nice old 58 Johnson. Yes carb kits are still available just about anywhere you look. Even without the motor on it, that's a good deal for an aluminum boat, so if you have to spend a little on the motor to get it running good, you won't be sorry you did. I would check over the condition of the coils and maybe put a new impeller in it. While you're at it, check the lower unit oil and make sure there isn't any water intrusion.

Probably doesn't even need a kit, bet you'd get away with just cleaning it. If the boat is decent that's a smokin deal.

Those old 18's are practically indestructable. Judging by the condition of the one you are looking at in that picture, it still has a lot of life in it. Like BK says, you may not need to rebuild the carb, just clean it out. If you want to see an interesting thread, you should look at mine, about the '57 Evinrude 18 I just acquired.:D:D

My thread here can pretty well describe how great these old motors are and how well they come back to life after serious neglect:cool::cool:
