photo (8).jpgThis is a 2008 Monterey 180FS recently posted on CL and the price seems more than fair, almost too good to be honest. He's asking $9800. What do you think?

Here's the copy in the listing:
I have a 2008 18ft Monterey 180FS I must sell before Aug. 24th. This price is very low, lower than trade in value at the local boat dealerships.
I have a 2008 Monterey 180FS boat for sale. It is black and white. Boat has 3.0 4cyl. mercruiser inboard/outboard with less than 60hours of use. Boat runs great and everything on it works. I will not take any trades so please do not ask. I also will not pay to ship it anywhere so do not ask. I will be willing to deliver it within 200 miles of Sanford NC for $100, less depending on distance. Boat is a great family boat and cruises at about 45mph. Email me if interested or if you would like to see pictures. I am able to show the boat anytime during the day and anytime during the week. Boat comes with aluminum trailer, 10 vests, new hydroslide, tube and ropes. ****Boat also has extended platform on the back****.

NADA is $15K. Does seem like a good price. Maybe he meant $19.8K.

The fact that the one picture has the registration numbers in it helps add credibility. I have see some CL ads with super low prices that are posted all over the US but they block out the registration numbers.

I am sending my brother over to buy it right now!!!! Just kidding!

Ad looks legit, and the boat looks pretty good. Get him to meet you at Jordan lake for a sea trial, I'm sure he's familiar with the lake and is only a couple hours from Winston Salem.

The seller contacted me via email and sent the higher quality photos I posted earlier. So far everything seems on the up and up but I can't help thinking it's one of those "too good to be true" deals. If it is legit, talking the wife into it will be the real challenge.

That is an incredible price on a 08 Monterey. If it is a real ad, I would jump on it. Like mentioned, book on it is near double that. You will love that rear swim platform. Very high quality boat too. I love my 08 214 FS.

Just make sure there is a clean title with the seller and the title is in his name. match the hull numbers on the boat to the hull number on the title. Not that I'm saying don't trust him, but don't trust anyone selling something for a great deal. Bring along a mechanic if you can and water test the boat.

Buy it with the intentions of flipping it and price it too high, so that you can keep it. LOL.

mnypitboat, you're a genius!!! So I should play it like this... "Honey, I have no idea why somebody wouldn't pay $20k for it, oh well, let's go to the lake!"

Ha, you got it. But then if someone gives you that much, look at the profit.

You're lucky I don't live in NC anymore or I'd be racing you there cash in hand just to flip it. :D

Here's his last email after I asked him why such a low price:

I had it posted for 15k, then 13,500. I have it financed through SML which is a goverment backed loan company. Due to the economic crisis they are offering a very discounted pay off for a short period of time. So I will be reducing the price to the discounted pay off in hopes to move it. I can assure you there is nothing wrong with the boat and will be glad to take you out to a local lake to prove it runs great. I can also show you the document from the finance company. I will actually do all of this with no strings attached....

Starting to be more and more of those "debt crisis" sales out there ... it's a buyers market in a lot of things. Maybe boats are next!! Grab it brother!

Sounds like a good deal, but even at that deal - be sure to get a test drive. There are lot's of lakes around them parts, meet him at one of them with cash in hand.

it might be worth paying a marine surveyor to inspect and test drive it. then if it really is 'too good to be true' you will know why :)

That certainly seems like a fire sale price. It is hard to compare a Monterey to a Bayliner if Bayliner is the Baseline and Monterey is several notches up but that is about the price of the equivalent BL. I've seen quite a few fire sales around here lately and generally I can guess it has a 3.0 before I even open the ad. They are getting cheaper as the economy gets spirals. I'm gathering that they are a lot of first time buyers that barely eeked into a boat, got the base engine and times got tough.

The 3.0 is the only negative thing I san see in this deal. I have a family of 4 (2 small kids) and will more times than not have a guest or 2 with us on the lake. The 3.0 might be a bit underpowered for my expectations. The question now is, if I were to pass on this I wonder how often deals like this will come around? I'm more than willing to wait it out for the right boat for me and my family to come around.

At that price, buy it, and if you find it to be underpowered, use it a couple seasons and resell it for a profit. Especially if it is your first boat. You may find it to be suffecient for your purposes.

The Monterey has a nice hull, and although it might be sluggish getting out of the hole, you will be fine once up on plane.
