I've been considering building a fiberglass encased wood boat from scratch. In researching what and how I'm gonna build this boat, guess who I ran into? Elkhunter! Lol.... great minds think alike I guess.

I'm probably going to build a 25 foot Toleman Jumbo. Some of my reasons for rebuilding the Chieftain are for fuel economy, seaworthyness, and they're just plain cool. The Jumbo nails all those requirements.

Now, all I have to do is finish up my repair list on the Chieftain so I can get out there and fish!! And, convince my Admiral that building a new boat is a must.

I want to build a jumbo 22' pilothouse. I'd love to follow a fellow starcraft guy building one of these to get my butt in gear to start. Are you going to buy a kit or do all the scarfing yourself?

I think that IF I ever start it'll take 3-4 years...I just don't have that much time, and I'll need a temporary shelter.

Good luck. These boats are awesome and super practical.

For the curious:

Itchy side? I think not, CJ. The Jumbo is a wood boat! You just use resin and glass to stop the leaks because Gluvit won't well work on wood. :D

Nice looking woodies!

I agree, GA. They're stitch and glue plywood boats, not plastic in a mold.

CJ, are you on the fishyfish board yet?

They are awesome boats and I've not seen one yet I didn't like. I'll have to build a temporary building structure also Chem. I registered on fishyfish last weekend, but have not been approved yet.

ElkHunter is already building a 25' Jumbo and is probably why he's been AOL around here.

You are so right about the itch GA.... it's a lot different laying up. If you're careful, you can minimize the grind :)

Also, CJ - The itch is to get her built and catching fish! Not quite like this. :fish2:

I didn't know Elk started building, I thought he was still kicking the idea around.

Hi guys, yes for those that are thinking of building a tolman visit fishyfish, great bunch of guys kind of like the starcraft bunch, just a different boat.
I have officially started building the tolman 26' ish Jumbo (probably end up 26' 3-8"), gotta exceed 26' for that 26' bar restriction. It's going to be a cuddy cabin boat with full pilot house, below deck fuel tank, I will post a few pictures when I get to a point of significant progress. I have my jig built, 5 sets of saw horses, just bought 21 sheets of plywood, versalam stringers 22' long, shelves cut out and ready to glue.

I have the starcraft I/O motor housing done, covered with 6oz cloth and marine epoxy, 3 coats of rustoleum paint.

Wife told me a few days ago she would like to be fishing in the new boat June 2016. :)

She will help paint and I have some helpers available when needed (dad and father inlaw) my 11 year old son will be helping out. I plan to cut the transom out tomorrow and work on getting plywood cut for the bottom panels.
the three worst parts of this project so far in the planning stages was finding wood (1 1/8 exterior plywood for shelves was joke, poor quality so I used doug fir; my marine plywood is 120 miles away, boat trailer ?, motors ? (the only dealers in Bend is mercury, nearby is honda or yahama) I am not real crazy about any of my options for one reason or another.

These are very customizable boats, I plan about a 7' cuddy, 9' pilot house, 8' fishing deck, 2' motor well.
My wife and I saw a 24'6 one last year in person and that changed her mind, that and I can't find a big starcraft in the NW at a reasonable price (been looking for 3yrs).

Month 1, month 2, month 3.......................Holy mackerel. Elk. Get back to work and cut some wood! That's a pretty aggressive schedule the Admiral set for you.

I am not sure I can make that schedule, a lot will depend on the temperatures this winter. I worked hard today and cut some wood. The transom is almost ready to glue together. Plan to hopefully cut bottom panels to width tomorrow. I have to order a 15 gallon kit of epoxy before I can proceed. I have been putting this off until I really need it. Heck it cost more than some tinny boats. Bought a 1.5 gallon kit awhile back and still have enough to do the scarf joints for the bottom panels but that about it.

Yep Elk, that is an aggressive schedule. That 15 gallon kit should get you most of the way. I expect we'll waste a little more that an experienced builder would.

Cj & Elk, good luck on your projects. Those look like great sea worthy boats. Looking forward to seeing some pic of these builds.

Thanks WnW.

Steven's already in the building mode with some pics on fishyfish. His jigs and molds are done and laying up the fairbody.

I have to wait until June for the funds to be available.... and build a deck  I'll be sure to keep you all in the loop.
