There is a 1989 Mariner 115HP motor for sale, seller is asking $1,175, says compression is 120 on all cylinders and will demonstrate for me.

Any opinions about this year, model?

I am fairly new to Mercury's but, but a fan already... the 1994 200HP 2.5L I got earlier this spring has been great!

Thanks, John

It is a Merc painted a different color.

4 cyl 2 + 2 design, the top two carbs have idle circuits, the lower two do not, so it idles on the top two only. There is an accelerator pump that gives a shot of fuel thru injectors to the lower cyls to assist coming on as the throttle is opened.

Once adjusted exactly as spelled out in the factory service manual, most won't even notice the difference in running on two or four cyl's.

The only problem with these are the motor mounted oil tanks, the float has a nasty habit of the adhesive failing to hold the magnet to the bottom of the float. When most fail, the magnet lands near the switch and sends a constant low oil alarm. However there are those rare cases where the magnet fell to one side, the operator never checks the oil, runs it out of oil and fries the motor. This problem applies to the whole series of motor mounted tanks, not just the 115.

Otherwise, it is a VERY solid motor when propped correctly and given regular care.

Thanks. So I suppose the oil injection system can't be disabled in favor of pre-mix in these motors since it only idles on the top two carbs?

Yes you can.

The oiling system simply mixes the oil and fuel. But consider the factory system is quite reliable and the human mind is fail-able, forget to mix even ONCE, and you toast the motor.

If you are absolutely religious about your fuel mix, you should be fine.

Thanks! So this oil system is reliable? I heard mixed (no pun intended) reviews about 80's oiling systems

My first outboards were all mix-it-yourself.
