Next year I am taking my boat down the Mississippi to the gulf of Florida. My boat is 1972 25' Pacemaker flybridge with a inboard 318. What do I have to do to protect my motor.

Not much you can do if you are not running a heat exchanger. Lots of engines have been cooled with salt water and have not been damaged. If you are coming back into fresh water, the engine will flush itself.

You will be fine. My engine does not get flushed at all. I use it every weekend and at least one evening during the week. I spray WD40 all over the engine(bilge), so that when it seats in the water it is somewhat protected from salt water mist that is in the air. Flush it with fresh water as soon as you possibly can once you take it out. Rinse the hull, so that salt does not dry on your paint or gelcoat.
Enjoy your time and don't worry.
BTW, Welcome to Iboats !!!
