skeeterboy, here is the latest report on Kentucky and Barkley. Updated the 17th.
______________________________________________
Kentucky Lake : Water Level at Ky Dam - 354.51 Surface Temperature - 48
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 354.45 Surface Temperature - 48

Well just last weekend we had temperatures in the 70's and the bass fishing was starting to pick up and this continued into the first part of this week but then here comes the nasty ol man winter with his cold fronts again about mid week and dropped the water temperatures a couple of degrees with cold north winds. As you can tell from my start here that fishing has been sporadic this past week. The past two days the bass fishing has been down right tough on N. Kentucky and N. Barkley. The Crappie anglers seem to be doing ok although most folks are telling me that the bite slowed somewhat over the past couple of days also. The water temperatures started to rebound this afternoon with the warmer day today and the weather forecast for the next 10 days looks very favorable for a good warming period and unless the weather folks are wrong again we should be seeing the best bass fishing for big fish yet to come over the next couple of weeks not to mention the Crappie should also be getting even better.

The Largemouth Bass are being taken on main lake points and secondary points in the bays casting suspending jerkbaits, medium running crankbaits, Texas rigged tubes and jignpig. There has been some lipless crankbait bite on the flats near wood cover on south Ky where the water temperatures have been warmer. This shallow water bite should pick up on the north ends of both lakes soon....all we need is a few more degrees in the surface temperatures in the mornings and this bite should take off.

The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake pea gravel points on the east side of Ky Lake and the first secondaries in the bays on suspending jerkbaits and medium running crankbaits. The better bite seems to be well off the banks so don't hesitate to back out off the banks if you are not getting any action.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are: Smithwick suspending rogue in black/chrome and clown, Rapala Husky Jerk in blue/chrome/orange, Rapala shadrap in crawdad, black/silver, and cold steel, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer/chartruese, Hook Some Bass tubes in chameleon craw and Hook Some Bass jigs in black/blue.

The Crappie are being taken in 8-12 ft of water by vertically fishing with small jigs and minnows over brush piles along the creek channel ledges in the bays and on the main lake. Some reports that bigger Crappie are still being taken in deeper water in the 16-20 ft range by spider rigging with small jigs and minnows over deep mats.

The Bluegill are biting on deep rocky creek channel banks with worms fished under bobbers.

Overall the first two weeks of March have been a little disappointing for numbers of bass considering the warmer water temperatures we had in late February. You just never know when ol man winter is going to throw you a curve ball but even at that we have had some nice big fish already this year and more are certain to come with the warmer weather in the forecast. Be careful when venturing on the lakes with the water at winter pool and the weather changing sometimes hourly...hypothermic conditions exist so you should take precautions to let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
