Re: GodsBeast

Hi GodsBeast, do you ever fish at False River?. If so, is it better for bass or catfish?. I'll be spending about a week to 10 days in Baton Rouge in march 2004.

Re: GodsBeast

I have not fished False River, hardly at all. One of the Captains has a almost an 8lb bass, mounted, that he caught out of False River. They have some Catfish, but if you really want to go after them, try the spillway (Intercoastal Canal) where I boat most often.

So set up for Bass, Brim & Perch, if your going to False River.

So Elmer Fudge, where are you coming from? Been to La. before? You'll love it!

Car. Texas, I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the bottom. What part of Texas is that in?

Carrollton is about twenty minutes north of downtown Dallas.I once lived in Baton Rouge in the latter 1980's, but it was only for very short spell and really did'nt get to know the place. My wife who was born and raised there knows nothing about fishing, and even more strange she eat's absolutely no seafood. What i remember the most about Louisiana is the food, ahh the food! Hey! i just get all excited when i think of this trip. The spillways sounds terrific,a friend of mine did also mentioned that to me. Would that be east or west of Baton Rouge?. I hear the place has changed so much that i would hardly recognise it.Is that true?.

Hey Elmer Fudge, Yes there has been some changes, but it is still recognizable. There are Spillways on both sides of Baton Rouge. It depends on where your end goal of ending up fishing is at, to where you should put in. Using the Intercoastal Waterway, uses locks, etc. to get to where you want, and if you just have time to kill, and money to burn, you can
almost cross the lower section of the state, by boat, using these connecting waterways.
The area I am talking about fishing for Catfish in the Intercoastal, there is a set of locks begining in Port Allen, where is starts from the Mississippi River, that you can go all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, if you wish, and not be in the Miss River, which also does this. In answer to your question the area I am talking about is "WEST OF BATON ROUGE" in fact crossing the new Mississippi Bridge (I-10 westbound) take the Plaquemine Exit, but veer right (to Port) and take the second right, which will be directly under the Intercoastal Bridge, "this bridge is La Hwy 1 which connects Port Allen going south all the way through Plaquemine all the way to get to Grand Isle" I don't use the launch site at the Port Allen, Locks, because My Boat is Large and long, and that launch site has potential problems with large long rigs, turning under those Bridge Support poles and backing down that ramp. Great for smaller type fishing boats though. I also like using the ramp in back Brusly, "Floyds Marley Marina" because there are more folks around there, that keep an eye on your parked stuff for you, and they get to know each others rigs. If you don't come out at night, folks will come looking for you, if you don't leave word that your staying out over night. Have not heard of any thefts or tampering with someone trailer and stuff at Marley, plus it is a nice easy ramp for Launching.

I went to a school in Richardson Texas for a year, which is near Dallas, and I also lived in Lake Jackson, Texas when I was younger.

Your right, the food is great in this area, the wife and I love Seafood, but not all folks in this area are crazy about Seafood. We both have members in the family that are allergic to it, and have to make seperate dishes when having family get togethers, when seafood is the main course. So your wife has company, being from this area, and not being big on Seafood. I bet she can make some other great dishes though.

Nope, i aint gotta whole lotta money to burn, just two weeks vacation coming up in march ,we'll be visiting the wife's folks so i'll try to get a fair bit of fishing in.I'm not gonna say anything bad about the wife's cooking, she makes an excellent Jambalaya. We sometimes get tasso shipped over night from Tonys Seafood on Plank Road. The info which you gave me is very helpful, i realize safety should be a factor when going to a place with which i'm not familiar with, it's great to know that they're still a lot of folks out there willing to keep an eye out for the interest of others. I will be bringing the boat down with me, and also a camera with lots of film cause i understand that the wildlife in the bayou is just awesome.

Hey Elmer, Do bring the Camera, you can see a lot of Wildlife, along the waterway, when puttering along. Right now, there are a lot of hunters, boating to one area or the other, they are respectful and helpful, and we are the same.
Point being, there is still some fishing going on, but they are more geared toward hunting now! That may drive some of the deer inward, but by March, they should be returning. In fact last month I saw 3 deer in one cruise, along one Bayou off of the Intercoastal.

What type of boat are you bringing down? And if you want directions to Floyd's Marley Marina here they are:

Leave B.R. westbound I-10 over New Mississippi River Bridge, again, take Plaquemine Exit Ramp, stay to left this time, and Merge onto La Hwy 1 southbound towards Plaquemine. Continue South, you will quickly cross the Intercoastal Canal bridge, go to the Third Red Light, which is in Brusly, take a right at that light. Go till that dead ends at a T intersection, "about a mile" and turn left, go around a 90 degree curve to the right, continue straight on that road, till it dead ends at Floyd's Marley Marina.

*Note after you go around that 90 degree curve to the right, you'll have two more good curves up ahead, and then you'll cross some Railroad tracks, then have a long straight away. Then another slight curve, Floyds Marley Marina will kind of POP UP on some folks all of a sudden after that curve, so slow down for all of those curves. There is a big reflective sign at the end of that road, and now, a guy has a large boat docked in the InterCoastal Canal, behind that sign, so you'll see it. In the course of many years, in the past, there have been a few folks that drove straight into the Water, but in most cases they were under the influence, in dark hours. 1 State Trooper took the plunge, responding as a back up officer to a situation back there years ago, but it was in the dark and he was not familiar with the area. They now have a bigger REFLECTIVE Warning Sign there now, because of that.

There is some good Catfishing and Brim fishing in Bayou Chactaw, which is a Bayou, close to Floyd's, and in between Floyd's and the other Port Allen Ramp I told you about before. Some folks set out some quick Catfish lines, using foating 2 liter bottles, then cast a few lures, trying for a Bass, or Brim, or (Sack-a-lay, not sure of the correct spelling), then run back and check the bottle lines they set out, rebait, then cast a few more lines, and repeat.

My wife even caught a Catfish on a beatle spin, w/a gold spinner. We also caught bass and brim on that same lure in this area. Floyds also has a old time Bar and Grill there, at the landing, and usually every Sunday has bands that play, and have Big Cookouts, Bar-b-que's and Gumbo's and Jambalaya's, most of those Sunday's also.

It is a good Family orentated area. My complaint is, I like to get my boat loaded on Sunday evenings before dark, and get my Truck and boat parked where I can get out. Some of the Sunday night party folks, that are not in boats, don't always park properly around the boat
trailers. Floyd continues to try to keep the boats and trailers on one side, and the vehicles on the other, but Sunday is a busy evening, so don't park where you can get blocked in!

Come and ENJOY! :D

Re: GodsBeast

Oh! I got me a lil ole 1986 ,15ft bass boat that i aquired a couple of years ago, it's my first boat, i had to do a lil bit of work on it nothing major though.the motor is a 1989 75hp Mariner,i replaced all the fuel and oil lines, rebuild the fuel pump ,changed the impeller, all with the help of the iboats forum which i've been reading quite extensively for about a year and a half, though i only manage to register this past august.Lot's of nice folks here, sometimes the debates get's a bit heated and entertaining but it stays clean which i like. Floyds looks like the kind of place i would enjoy, maybe i'll learn me some of those cajun dances :D Those folks sure know how to enjoy life so i've been told. Thanks for the precise directions and all the great info,i'm really looking forward to this trip,i'll definetly give you a heads up right before we leave.many many thanks GodsBeast.

Re: GodsBeast

Your very Welcome. Your boat would work on either Launch site! I prefer Floyds! The Port Allen Ramp is free, Floyds costs 2 dallors, but worth it in my book.

Yep, we are Dancers, just another way to get next to the pretty ladies :D

Be sure to holler when your coming, glad to help when I can.
