what is the best way to wire a 2002 gmc pickup. nobody makes a t-connector, and the truck currently has a 4-way, but it does't work. should I just cut off the old one, check the continuity, and put a new one, or what.

If it's a 2002 and what's on there doesn't work, I'd be checking fuses for the first thing..there may be seperate fuses for the trailer wiring.<br />My 98 Jeep didn't come with the tow package, so I installed the factory 7 pin harness and it is pretty much plug n play. I'm sure you can find good stuff in the aftermarket too.

Re: gmc sierra wiring

Checking for continuity after cutting the old one off is kind of like amputating a limb to determine if the bone is broken...so that's not such a good plan, IMO. I'd recommend checking each terminal of the plug for voltage BEFORE you cut it off (obviously with the appropriate lights and turn signals on, etc.) so you can actually diagnose the problem. What is actually wrong with it beyond "doesn't work?"<br /><br />Even if it does need to be replaced, there's new T-connector wiring harnesses available for every 2002 GMC truck in any type of plug you might want to have. A local Uhaul store, NAPA or similar place will be able to set you up with a plug N play replacement, no wire cutting necessary (assuming your problem is actually in the plug as you seem to suspect.) Or do a Google search for "GMC Sierra trailer wire harness" and many on-line suppliers will pop up for you.

Are you sure the problem is on the truck and not the trailer. A bad ground on the truck or the trailer can cause problems.

My dad has an '04 gmc sierra. We added a hitch and wiring and it plugged right in, no problems. I got the wiring from summit racing along with the hitch. I actually couldnt believe how easy it was - Im used to cryptic things related to my jeep.

Re: gmc sierra wiring

I tried checking the continuity of the old connector, nothing it is quite corroded, the previous owner attached it to the factory trailer wioring harness that was provided, but he wrapped it in electrical tape and I was thinking that by taking off the old one I could see if there was a short or broken wire under the tape. The fuses are the same as the tailights, and they all work.

Re: gmc sierra wiring

You don't check for continuity -- you check for voltage using a test light or voltmeter. If you don't have either one, make a test light from any tail light or instrument panel bulb. Solder two wires to it. Put one lead on the white terminal on the plug and the other on the each of the remaining three terminals. You obviously have to turn things on. To check the trailer use a battery charger. Connect the negative lead to the trailer frame. Touch each of the other three terminals and the appropriate light should turn on. Turn signals obviously won't blink because there is no flasher but it proves the circuit is good. Use a battery if you don't have a charger.

Re: gmc sierra wiring

I am not worried about the trailer, the lights work with my old truck and my wife's jeep. The truck has a wiring harness that came with it, it was folded up behind the frame, and the previous owner put a flat four on it. what I think is the owner didn't use it much and the wires inside the electrical tape are not right, what guess I have to do is take off the tape and go from there.

Your GMC trailer wiring has separate fuses for all the functions. They are located both in the underhood fuse panel and on the drivers side of your dash.Check those if you haven't already.

Re: gmc sierra wiring

I started back at the factory wiring harness and put on a new flat four and back in business.
