How you ask? If you were to be the top executive in a 100 BILLION dollar a year company, what compensation would you ask for? If the running of a corporation that employs 350,000 people doesn't rate making the big bucks, what does? Why is 3 million bucks a years "obscene" while A-Rod makes 4 times more playing a game?

The issue at stake is WHY GM is is this predicament and the answer is simple. Unsound business practices and a severe lag time between action and reaction. If any of you work in a company that has more than a couple people in it, you know that meetings are the single biggest time wasters around. Things just don't happen quickly and the bigger the company gets the worse it is.

GM could have pioneered the building of small, fuel efficient vehicles that offer comfort, features and great mileage but they stayed with what was working. They could have offered vehicles with alternate fuel requirements, with better safety ratings, with better "bells and whistles", but they didn't. They gave in to too many profit draining causes over the years and they can't build a car anymore that makes money. Did you know that it costs them almost $1,500 per car just to cover health care costs? Or that the recent "employee pricing" deal cost GM on every vehicle they sold?

This is a problem that will not go away. As more American companies see that they've grown fat, dumb and happy they're no longer competitive.

UFM82

i've had no problems with my '03 suburban. you know i got the extended warranty though.

gm's hosed. they lost $4 billion in 9 months. labor contracts mean that laid off workers will still get paid and still get full benefits. so, the plants are closed with no revenue coming in but the workers still get paid. how long can a business survive like that? how can they compete?

if workers take retirement packages, they still cost the company money.

they're in a huge hole now...who is going to lend them that kind of money to turn things around? their credit rating is near junk, that means it costs more to borrow money too.

"I will only buy American. I wish more Americans would think about buying American ! "

Buy American? How? Just because the company started out as an American company don't think you are getting a made in America product. Not to many years ago Hondas were more American then Harleys.

Americans don't want American owned and built
automobiles. There is a perceived quality and
reliability problem. They want vehicles that dont
depreciate as fast, have higher resale values.
GM's market share along with Ford has been steadily
dropping and there share of the pie has been getting
smaller and smaller, even as quality and reliability has
increased. The market has turned away from the domestic
to the import. Its a global market now.
The days of patronage are over.A large reason for the
backlash against the domestic is the way their products
are sold and marketed.
Most domestic products are as well built as their
imported competitors.
Once the tide has changed it can be very difficult to redirect it.

Does that mean that you will or have ended your patronage of Walmart and other big-box retailers who are major proponents of decreased Chinese unemployment?
