Re: GM cutting jobs closing plants

GM has been crippled by high labour, pension, health care and materials costs, as well as by sagging demand for sport utility vehicles, its longtime cash cows, and by bloated plant capacity.
The unions are great. Helpin the little guy to fight back big-bad-corporation. Fought so hard they fought their constituants out of their jobs.

Compare the three biggest Union-based companies with the three biggest non-Union-based companies. See who is doing better... and see who's employees are happier.

Sean

I wonder if the buick plant in china will supply new buicks for all the blue hairs and caps in florida now ?
or tyhe plants in brazil? I understand some of the canadian and european plants may slow down as well. wonder how GM in south korea is doing? seems toyota employs a bit like nissan in the states though.
so its happy holidays all you GM folks. sorry but the management has better things going on. seems they could have held off till at least spring anyway.

I can't believe the plant in Janesville beat the axe. It was built in 1918. But the workers recently accepted reductions in their benefits. I have to assume that had something to do with it. They make Tahoe's and Suburbans there.

Blaming any one group for this is way too simplistic. Automation has come, productivity has increased, and logically you'd think it would have reduced jobs. It has actually increased them, although they may be different jobs now.

The only thing you can absolutely count on are things are in a constant state of flux and change.
You have to learn how to adapt to the change, which is easier said than done, of course. Still, it is the only option available.

Creative destruction. No union, or trade policy, or anything else is going to protect one from it. You have to plan for it and expect it.

The Aveo is a Dawoo rebadged. I loved my Dawoo hated the Aveo they messed it up and I stalled it twice on the test drive and I have never done that before!

I kinda like my Chevy Colorado it kinda seems ok but the good feelings are not there. To find the Truck in the lot you need to be in the bed and push the panic button! It has auto lights but you can't turn them off to start the darn thing. The neighbor loves being blasted at 5:30 every moring as I back in and his windows are across from my garage.
There are hoses hanging under the rails and the hood flexes at speed. Becasue it is built stronger than it predessor the S-10, I had to buy trailer brakes to help stop my boat!
Good things are the room and the milage.
I wish Ford built a 4 door Ranger.
Next time I really might consider a Nissan or a Toyota, really.

On the lot are some Brand Spanking new 2004 Colorados. I should have known better.
At least I bought a 6 year warranty.

I will never buy another Chevy.

Sorry Realgun, but I think ford still makes the ranger sport trac, which is a four door pickup based on the ranger platform.

Tale of Two Autos

Last year I bought a Mazda Miata for my wife and a Chevrolet Colorado for me (Edit: Heck it was only April 2005 for the Chevy). Both are driven on the same types of roads, including gravel ones.

Both vehicles have approximately the same mileage on them: 17,000

Service history for the Miata: 3 oil changes.

Service history for the Colorado:

Windshield wiper motor failed the first night.

Ignition switch became hard to turn

Check engine light came on

Interior rear-view mirror fell off. Dealer said it wasn't covered under warranty and it cost me $80==but not from him

Premature tire wear, GM replaced both front tires at 10,500 miles. Dealer said warranty covered toe-in and camber adjustment but not caster. $47.00 please.

So far I have had 3 flats from the OEM General Tires, and have replaced them with another brand.

More warranty work done--and trouble--out of this puppy than I have had in my last 4 new vehicles.

Maybe that's why they are cutting production.

Re: GM cutting jobs closing plants

I'm an American, and will only purchase american cars. I really don't care what Nissan or Lexus have to offer....wouldn't buy either one. My Ford truck is doing fine and my Cadillac is about ready to be retired( at almost 200K miles), and my new wifes 05 Pontiac is great. She was looking at a toyota....untill I explained things to her....she loves the Pontiac. Most likely sometime next year, I will be looking for a new Cadillac....really don't care what Lexus or any other foreign maker has...I will only buy American. I wish more Americans would think about buying American !

Re: GM cutting jobs closing plants

so explain how the top execs get so much while the corperation is going bankrupt in the states? and how does the chief financial officer get a 2.95million package when they are being investigated for accounting irregularities?. seems a bit odd to me.
