You could put a 500 hp 8.1L in it and it would last if you are careful but that also means you have to limit your max rpm. Since with bigger engines and higher hp, you go full speed in a 25' boat no matter how long it takes you to get there, you are putting a big load on the drive and the coupler. If you want to know where that line is, well, who knows. You tell us when you find it.

The Good news is,... SEI replacements are only 'bout $1500. a pop.... Complete....

You can burn up Alotta Alphas for the price of a Bravo conversion...

I'm not doing the swap for the for the up, doing it for the fuel injection and economy. It's for fishing and cruising, not speed. Only gonna go for it if the current merc. 260 doesn't go well. I have not had the boat in the water yet since purchasing it.

If you want economy use the 5.3... those 6.0's are gas hogs. But I am sure you want the power from the 6.0.... everyone does :)

How much of that 6.0 is marine rated?

I understand that none of the parts swap. As far as marine rated, none of it its all out of 04 2500 suburban.

I know the starter, waterpump and alt. Will need to be changed to marine grade.

Manifolds and risers will need to be purchased.

With aluminum heads on an iron block, you would also have to scrape together a closed cooling system.

The ignition and fuel system should also be marine rated for safety. Your complete ECM won't work for marine as the marine systems don't use an O2 sensor, you can program around that. But with the cost off all the conversion needed, you can buy a lot of gas with your present engine.

I'm a mechanic of 17 years the engine stuff I'm good with.

The outdrive stuff is what I'm new at. That's what my question was about. There are plenty of people over powering alphas and they live. (for awhile) lol

Tuning is no problem, I already have full version of efi live. I can easily remove o2 sensors. However would need to have a wideband somewhere to tune correctly.

If I do change to the 6.0, a bravo 1 swap would be next.

Thanks for the replies.

Lots of people put way more than 300 hp (rated limit) in front of an Alpha drive, are careful about it, use good synthetic lube, change it often, and have no problems. Others hammer it out of the hole and break the drive within minutes. It all depends how smart you are with your right hand. I'm actually building a 400+hp 383 to put in front of an alpha (see signature), and I've been told by many people to add an extra $1500 to the project cost for a new drive. Some even say to just buy it and have it ready for when yours goes. It'll save you a week of boating season, and as Bondo said, it's way cheaper than a bravo.

Check the specs on a GM Marine engine with regards to what you need to do to your 04 motor. Along with the other items mentioned you should also upgrade to stainless valves. Most of the newer engines have them now because of Ethanols love/hate relationship with water. A boat engine needs them because when you shut that motor off it will still be breathing while it cools and with all that water around condensation will form. You don't absolutely have to go with Stainless valves but they will save you a lot of headaches and they're not a big ticket item.

The topic in my opinion belongs in non-repair! Along with the rest of "what if" I do this.

Pete104 if it needs to be moved, move it then. Sorry for putting it in the wrong spot.

Sschefer, I agree, will look into that for sure.
I found a guy that has a compete bravo 1 drive that is still attached to a stern that has been cut out for $1100. Gonna go get it today.
